‘Opening the doors of education’: Language policy at the University of Johannesburg

Anne-Marie Beukes

This study explores language policy and management at one of South Africas historically Afrikaans-medium universities, the University of Johannesburg. The backdrop for the investigation is the changed landscape of higher education and the National Plan for Higher Educations provision that a multilingual environment be created in which all South African languages are developed as academic/scientific languages. The University of Johannesburg has designated four languages as primary languages for academic, administrative, communication and marketing purposes. The study reports on teaching staffs experiences and perceptions of the universitys language policy, and their ideas and beliefs regarding the usefulness of the four designated languages.

‘The greasy pole of dehumanisation’: Language and violence in South Africa

Anne-Marie Beukes

Abstract The study attempts a preliminary investigation of the nexus between language and violence in democratic South Africa. The backdrop for the study is the recent spiral of violence in all its forms and guises that keeps growing and threatens to erode the political and legal gains of the post-apartheid era, and the discourses of violence that characterise public life in South Africa. The basic tenet of the study is that South Africas multilingual dispensation offers ample opportunities to embrace linguistic diversity as a tool for understanding and promoting a culture of peace. The study traces progress made as regards some of the elements that may ensure that a culture of peace is promoted and maintained in multilingual South Africa, such as respect for human rights, the ecology of languages, building strong social institutions and greater language awareness.

Uitdagings en struikelblokke by die vertaling van die FIT internasionale-vertaalterminologielys in Afrikaans

Anne-Marie Beukes; Marné Pienaar

Abstract This article reports on a project whereby a translation list consisting of some 200 key concepts identified by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) was revised and translated into Afrikaans. The article is concerned with the processes followed in compiling a multilingual translation terminology list and reflects on some of the challenges and pitfalls experienced in the process. The project was conceptualised and executed against the backdrop of the governments Language Policy for Higher Education (DoE, 2002) and its requirement that opportunities to promote multilingualism in the higher education context be created. The aim of the list is therefore primarily pedagogical, that is, to facilitate access to central concepts of translation through carefully selected terms that are used in the teaching of translation studies and translation practice. A secondary aim is to contribute to the process of creating and sustaining a dynamic environment for the use of indigenous languages as a medium of instruction in higher education and ultimately for scientific progress.
