Improvement of range-free localization technology by a novel DV-hop protocol in wireless sensor networks

Linqing Gui; Thierry Val; Anne Wei; Rejane Dalce

Localization is a fundamental issue for many applications in wireless sensor networks. Without the need of additional ranging devices, the range-free localization technology is a cost-effective solution for low-cost indoor and outdoor wireless sensor networks. Among range-free algorithms, DV-hop (Distance Vector-hop) has the advantage to localize the mobile nodes which has less than three neighbour anchors. Based on the original DV-hop algorithm, this paper presents two improved algorithms (Checkout DV-hop and Selective 3-Anchor DV-hop). Checkout DV-hop algorithm estimates the mobile node position by using the nearest anchor, while Selective 3-Anchor DV-hop algorithm chooses the best 3 anchors to improve localization accuracy. Then, in order to implement these DV-hop based algorithms in network scenarios, a novel DV-hop localization protocol is proposed. This new protocol is presented in detail in this paper, including the format of data payloads, the improved collision reduction method E-CSMA/CA, as well as parameters used in deciding the end of each DV-hop step. Finally, using our localization protocol, we investigate the performance of typical DV-hop based algorithms in terms of localization accuracy, mobility, synchronization and overhead. Simulation results prove that Selective 3-Anchor DV-hop algorithm offers the best performance compared to Checkout DV-hop and the original DV-hop algorithm.

A New Approach for Clustering in Wireless Sensors Networks Based on LEACH

Salim El Khediri; Nejah Nasri; Anne Wei; Abdennaceur Kachouri

Abstract Wireless sensors networks (WSNs) are traditionally composed of large number of low-cost and tiny homogenous sensors nodes connected through a wireless network that gather data to be treated locally or relayed to the sink node through multi-hop wireless transmission. Moreover, such issues are very critical due servers resources constraints like efficient energy, stock limitation and lifetime of network. Several solutions were proposed to minimize the traffic into network. Clustering algorithms have been widely used to reduce energy consumption. In this context, the key point in such topology is to select a cluster. One of solutions is to select a cluster alternately. However, this choice does not consider the energy as important criteria in actual papers. In order to limit energy consumption, our new method is proposed in this paper to optimization Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (O- LEACH) to improve existing LEACH and LEACH-C by selecting cluster according to the residual energy of nodes dynamically. The simulation results show that proposed algorithm achieve longer stability by comparison to original LEACH and LEACH-C.

System Scheduling for Multi-Description Video Streaming Over Wireless Multi-Hop Networks

Liang Zhou; Benoit Geller; Baoyu Zheng; Anne Wei; Jingwu Cui

Providing real-time multimedia applications over wireless multi-hop networks is a challenging problem because the wireless channels are highly sensitive to delay, interference and topology changes. Multiple description coding (MDC), as a new emerging error-resilient technique, has been widely used recently in wireless video transmission. Its fundamental principle is to generate multiple correlated descriptions such that each description approximates the source information with a certain level of fidelity. Inevitably, MDC introduces many description streams which may influence each other and thus, reasonable system scheduling is needed to provide a satisfied video quality. The novelty of this work is to investigate the optimal distributed scheduling for multiple competing MDC streams in a resource-limited wireless multi-hop network. This is achieved by joint optimization of MDC, rate control and multipath routing. Two joint optimal algorithms, namely a distributed rate control and routing (DRCR) and a simplified DRCR algorithm, are proposed to solve this problem with constraints that arise from the multiple description streams among multiple users via multiple paths. Both algorithms are designed in a distributed manner that is amenable to on-line implementation for wireless networks. Theoretical analysis and simulation results are provided which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed joint schemes.

Liang Zhou; Baoyu Zheng; Benoit Geller; Anne Wei; Shan Xu; Yajun Li

In this paper, we address the rate control, the Medium Access Control (MAC) and the routing problem for cooperative Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) in the framework of cross-layer design. At first, we introduce the cooperative communication conception to VANET, and propose an opportunistic cooperation strategy to improve the system performance. And then, we develop a cross-layer solution which consists of the link capacity detection with adjusting persistence probability at the MAC Layer, the flow rate control with the maximal utility at the Transport Layer and the routing design at the Network Layer. This proposal is designed in distributed manner in order to support a simple and efficient implementation for VANET. Furthermore, some practical issues, such as fairness and network cost, are presented for implementing the proposed solution and improving the system performance. Simulation results show that the proposed opportunistic cooperation strategy combined with joint control algorithm achieves the desired performance over VANET.

Mauricio Iturralde; Anne Wei; Tara Ali Yahiya; André-Luc Beylot

In this paper a two level resource allocation scheme is proposed to enhance the Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia services in LTE downlink system. It corresponds to a solution that combines cooperative game theory, a virtual token mechanism, and the EXP-RULE algorithm. By using cooperative game theory such as bankruptcy game and Shapley value, the proposed mechanism works by forming coalitions between flow classes to distribute bandwidth fairly. EXP-RULE algorithm has been modified to use a virtual token mechanism to improve its performance. By taking into account constraints such as Shapley value fairness and the virtual token robustness, the proposed mechanism can increase remarkably the performance for real time flows such as video and VoIP in downlink system. The performance evaluation is conducted in terms of system throughput, packet loss ratio (PLR), cell spectral efficiency and fairness index.

Mauricio Iturralde; Tara Ali Yahiya; Anne Wei; André-Luc Beylot

The LTE specification provides QoS of multimedia services with fast connectivity, high mobility and security. However, 3GPP specifications have not defined scheduling algorithms to support real time and non-real time application services. In this paper we propose a modified version of M-LWDF and EXP/PF scheduling algorithms based on token mechanism, which provide better performance to real time flows such as video and VoIP in downlink system. By taking the arrival rates of packets to queues into account, the proposed mechanism included in previous scheduling algorithms, can increase remarkably the bit-rate for multimedia services. Simulation results show that the proposed modified algorithms can achieve a throughput gain for real time services specially for video traffic. Performance evaluation is conducted in terms of system throughput and packet loss ratio (PLR).

The LTE specification provides QoS of multimedia services with fast connectivity, high mobility and security. However, 3GPP specifications have not defined scheduling algorithms to support real time and non-real time application services. In this paper we propose a two level scheduling scheme composed by cooperative game concept and EXP-RULE scheduling algorithm. By using cooperative game theory such as bankruptcy game and Shapley value, the proposed mechanism works by forming coalition between flow classes to distribute the bandwidth fairly. To make a performance judgment, the proposed downlink scheduling scheme has been compared to other well known schedulers such as M-LWDF and PF. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the performance on the used metrics among services. The performance evaluation is conducted in terms of system throughput, packet loss ratio (PLR), cell spectral efficiency and fairness Index.

Multi-User Video Streaming over Multiple Heterogeneous Wireless Networks: A Distributed, Cross-Layer Design Paradigm

Liang Zhou; Benoit Geller; Xiao-Jun Wang; Anne Wei; Baoyu Zheng; Han-Chieh Chao

In this paper, we address the problem of QoS (Quality of Service) provisioning for multi-user video streaming over multiple heterogeneous wireless networks based on the distributed, cross-layer design framework. By jointly considering the rate allocation and the Joint Source-Channel Coding (JSCC), our proposal aims at maximizing the QoS provisioning under the given resource constraint. At first, we develop and evaluate a framework for optimal video rate allocation over multiple networks based on the observed Available Bit Rate (ABR) and the Round Trip Time (RTT) over each access network, as well as the video rate-distortion characteristics. The rate allocation is formulated as a convex optimization problem that minimizes the sum of all video streams expected distortion. Then, we propose an analytical JSCC scheme for error-resilient scalable encoded video, and integrate the JSCC with the specific rate allocation algorithm to improve the constructed video quality by optimally applying the appropriate channel coding rate given the constraints imposed by the transmission rate and the prevailing channel conditions. Objective and subjective simulation results are provided which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed joint scheme.

Resource Allocation for Real Time Services in LTE Networks: Resource Allocation Using Cooperative Game Theory and Virtual Token Mechanism

Mauricio Iturralde; Anne Wei; Tara Ali-Yahiya; André-Luc Beylot

The LTE specifications provide QoS for multimedia services with fast connectivity, high mobility and security. However, 3GPP specifications have not defined scheduling algorithms to exploit the LTE characteristics to support real time services. In this article we propose a two level scheduling scheme composed by cooperative game theory, a virtual token mechanism, and the well known algorithms EXP-RULE and Modified-Largest Weighted Delay Firs (M-LWDF) in downlink system. By using cooperative game theory such as bankruptcy game and Shapley value, the proposed mechanism works by forming coalitions between flow classes to distribute the bandwidth fairly among all of them. Both algorithms EXP-RULE and M-LWDF have been modified to use a virtual token mechanism to improve their performance, giving priority to real time flows. By taking the arrival rate of packets into account, the proposed mechanism partially included in previous schedulers has been adapted to this work to increase remarkably the performance of the resource allocation for real time flows. The performance evaluation is conducted in terms of system throughput, Packet loss ratio, total cell spectral efficiency, delay and fairness index.

A Robust Resolution-Enhancement Scheme for Video Transmission Over Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

Liang Zhou; Baoyu Zheng; Anne Wei; Benoit Geller; Jingwu Cui

Historically, Error-Resilient (ER) video transmission and Super-Resolution (SR) image reconstruction techniques have evolved separately. In this paper, we propose a coordinated application of ER and SR to enhance the resolution of image transmitted over mobile ad-hoc networks. In order to combat error propagation, a flexible multiple description coding method based on shifted 3-D SPIHT (3-D Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees) algorithm is presented to generate variable independent descriptions (substreams) according to the network condition. And then, a novel unequal error protection strategy based on the priority level is provided to assign a higher level of error protection to more important parts of bitstream. Moreover, a robust SR algorithm is proposed in the presence of different kinds of packet loss rate to enhance the image resolution. Experimental results indicate that the proposed robust resolution-enhancement scheme outperforms the competing methods from the aspects of PSNR (Peak-Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and visual quality under different packet loss rates.
