Financing of women-owned ventures: The impact of gender and other owner -and firm-related variables

Abstract While women-owned ventures represent an increasing proportion of new businesses in most western countries, most of them have particular financing patterns and encounter barriers in their access to financing. Recent research on the question argues that barriers to financing are mainly dependent on factors other than gender, such as owner- and firm-related characteristics. This quantitative and qualitative study, through descriptive statistics and interview analysis, examines the relationship between financing patterns and barriers and gender from the woman entrepreneurs viewpoint. It explores the behaviours and representations of women entrepreneurs towards financing, and considers to what extent the women see their own approaches as being different from those of men. Our study suggests that a gender effect still exists, and tries to identify its location and the corresponding implications for further research and action.

Dix ans de réingénierie des processus d'affaires : qu'avons-nous appris?

L’ambition de cet article est de réaliser une analyse et une critique de l’un des modèles managériaux les plus populaires des dix dernières années dans le monde des entreprises et dans les écoles de gestion : le reengineering (BPR), ou la réingénierie des processus d’affaires. Dans la première partie, l’auteur dégage les principales composantes de la réingénierie des processus d’affaires à partir d’une analyse du contenu des écrits managériaux. Dans la seconde partie, elle s’intéresse à la mise en oeuvre de ce changement dans le quotidien des organisations. Plus spécifiquement, elle fait la synthèse d’études empiriques européennes et anglo-saxonnes et présente certains résultats de sondages effectués en Belgique. Elle résume aussi les principaux facteurs expliquant l’échec et les difficultés des projets de réingénierie. Elle termine par un questionnement relatif à l’apparente rupture des modes de pensée et d’organisation du travail annoncée dans ce modèle managérial et s’interroge sur les conséquences de cette situation pour l’analyse et la gestion de tels processus de changement.

Trade Unions and Social Dialogue: A Challenge for Diversity Management

Abstract The aim of this chapter is to take stock of the aspect of the social concertation in the framework of policies of diversity management. It rests in particular on the work of a commission created by the AFMD (French Association of Diversity Managers), in partnership with ORSE (a French Societal Observatory). The commission has involved several larges French companies and organised meetings between the representatives of the different employers’ and workers’ organisations. Another source is the numerous actions led by the Labour Unions in Belgium in the framework of the Consortium Diversite Wallonie, which exists since 2007. This study tries to remind some objectives of social concertation in regards to policies of diversity management, to take stock of the legal constraints on concertation in regards to particular targets, to show the multiple conceptions of this notion of diversity management among social partners, to give an overview of the content of the agreements, and to present the steps of a social concertation sensible to diversity.
