Estimation of CO2 Emission from Sugar cane production in Okinawa by the Life Cycle Assessment

In agricultural development, we have mainly considered economic aspects so far, but we have to consider environmental aspects for the sustainable development of agriculture from now on. In other words, we have to adopt an agriculture system with a low environmental load. So, in this study, we estimated the CO2 emissions from the sugar cane production that is the main agricultural activity in Okinawa using the LCA method developed by NIAES, and the following conclusions were obtained. (1)The CO2 emissions from fertilization using chemical fertilizers are large in all prroducing districts and all planting styles.(2)Minami Daitou, which is one of the typical districts producing sugar cane, used much materials in all planting styles.(3)The CO2 emissions per unit yield in the perennial planting were less than those in the other two planting styles.
