Prayer, Religiosity, and Healing in the Heartland, USA: A Research Note

Kathy K. Trier; Anson D. Shupe

In recent years interest has grown among sociologists of religion as well as sociologists of medicine about the plethora of alternative health therapies now consumed by Americans. Prayer is one of these. Using data taken from a random sample of Midwesterners, this study examines the prevalence and correlates of prayer specifically addressed to health concerns. Prayer, it was found, was regarded by almost one in three respondents as an efficacious tactic for maintaining and restoring health, but not at the expense of conventional biomedical care. The implications for health care professionals are considered.

Social Participation and Voting Turnout The Case of Japan

Anson D. Shupe

well-established body of research points to social participation A in formal organizations and in civic events as an important concomitant of mass political participation in the United States (e.g., Verba and Nie, 1972; Olsen, 1972, 1970; Hastings, 1965, 1954; Milbrath, 1965; Erbe, 1964; Kornhauser, 1959; Berelson et al., 1954; Maccoby, 1958; Freeman and Showel, 1951). Indeed, as Verba and Nie (1972: 174) state: “A rich associational life has been considered the hallmark of American democracy.” Comparative studies affirm a similar relationship in other Western democracies (Olsen, 1974: Nie et al., 1969; Almond and Verba, 1965). However, the extent to which this pattern holds in nonWestern societies has received far less examination. The purpose of this article is, first, to determine if social participation significantly promotes or is associated with political participation, particularly voting and attitudes supportive of it, in rural Japan, and, second, to indicate political socialization processes that may explain whatever relationship exists. Japan offers an important case for comparison since it is a highly industrialized democracy whose political culture until the last three decades has been characterized as“parochiaP

Vicissitudes of public legitimacy for religious groups : A comparison of the Unification and Roman Catholic Churches

Anson D. Shupe

Media coverage of alleged scandals, malfeasance, and abuse committed by religious agents and their organizations have proliferated since the 1970s. Such exposes have included the gurus and messiahs of new religious movements, corrupt and hypocritical televangelists, and sexually predatory clergy. But even when such claims are alleged or confirmed, their exposures do not occur in a vacuum. Indeed, the reactions to such claims are affected by a number offactors. A major dimension of the contexts of such revelations is the influence of religious groups over two communities : (1) the internal community offaith; and (2) the larger external social environment of non-believers and the institutions they control. This article examines two well-publicized organizations, the Unification Church and the Roman Catholic Church, which have each experienced media coverage shifting from the negative to the positive and vice-versa, and the effects of these twin loci of influence on their respective fortunes in the United States.

Anson D. Shupe; Martin E. Marty; R. Scott Appleby

Around the world, fundamentalist movements are profoundly affecting the way we live. Misinformation and misperception about fundamentalism exacerbate conflicts at home and abroad. Here The Fundamentalism Project has brought together 15 historians, sociologists, political scientists and scholars of education and international relations for a discussion of the advances made by anti-secular religious movements, showing the impact these movements have had on human relations, education, womens rights and scientific research. The essays consider developments within the religious traditions of Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism in over a dozen nations.
