Characterization of Fabric Luster via Image Analysis

Anthony Anton; K.A. Johson; P.A. Jansson

Fabric luster is usually described visually (e.g. dull, bright, glittery, etc). Instrumental reflectance measurements have been applied to gauge luster, but these techniques only give overall reflectance values and do not adequately describe the luster. Image texture analysis, on the other hand, has been successfully applied to characterise luster. In the procedurc a fabric surface is photographed, the photonegative scanned on a digital microdensitometer, and the data processed in a computer. In the work described the images formed by light rellected from carpet surfaces accurately represent the carpet luster appearance. Quantitative and descriptive luster measurements show that people rate carpet luster mainly on the quantity and intensity of specular glitter points.

A universal automatic recording titrator

Anthony Anton; Paul W. Mullen

Abstract A universal automatic macro-micro recording titration unit is described which has the capabilities of a multitude of commercial single-purpose titration instruments without the attendant duplication of hardware. It is based on a modified Precision Dow Recording Titrator and offers the operator a choice of liquid or coulometrically generated titrants and potentiometric, amperometric, thermometric, photometric, or conductometric end-point detection systems. The potentiometric system gives straightforward curve-presentation; the photometric mode employs a monochromator for maximum sensitivity and is equally adaptable to colorimetric, turbidometric, and chemiluminescent titrimetry; the conductometric mode employs a novel electrolytic conductivity transducer which produces a d.c. signal proportional to the 60-cycle a.c. current between the electrodes. All components are easily constructed or are commercially available.

Some Comments About Predicting Fiber Response by Thermal and Spectroscopic Techniques

Anthony Anton

The effect of thermal energy on matrix mobility of oriented polyamide fibers can be determined by ATR infrared spec troscopy, broad-line nmr and DSC. A composite of these techniques are required for predicting the response of the polyamide fiber during dyeing and heat setting.
