Concern over the amount of by-catch from benthic trawl fisheries and research into the problem have increased in recent years. The present paper demonstrated that by-catch rates in the Queensland (Australia) saucer scallop (Amusium balloti) trawl fishery can be reduced by 77% (by weight) using nets fitted with a turtle excluder device (TED) and a square-mesh codend, compared with a standard diamond-mesh codend with no TED. This large reduction was achieved with no significant effect on the legal size scallop catch rate and 39% fewer undersize scallops were caught. In total, 382 taxa were recorded in the by-catch, which was dominated by sponges, portunid crabs, small demersal and benthic fish (e.g. leatherjackets, stingerfish, bearded ghouls, nemipterids, longspine emperors, lizard fish, triggerfish, flounders and rabbitfish), elasmobranchs (e.g. mainly rays) and invertebrates (e.g. sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and bivalve molluscs). Extremely high reductions in catch rate (i.e. ≥85%) were demonstrated for several by-catch species owing to the square-mesh codend. Square-mesh codends show potential as a means of greatly reducing by-catch and lowering the incidental capture and mortality of undersize scallops and Moreton Bay bugs (Thenus australiensis) in this fishery.

This analysis of the variations of brown tiger prawn (Penaeus esculentus) catch in Moreton Bay multispecies trawl fishery estimated catchability using a delay difference model. It integrated several factors responsible for variations in catchability: targeting of fishing effort, increasing fishing power and changing availability. An analysis of covariance was used to define fishing events targeted at brown tiger prawns. A general linear model estimated inter-annual variations of fishing power. Temperature-induced changes in prawn behaviour played an important role on the dynamics of this fishery. Maximum likelihood estimates of targeted catchability (4.09 ± 0.42 × 10−4 boat-day−1) were twice as large as non-targeted catchability (1.86 ± 0.25 × 10−4 boat-day−1). The causes of recent declines in fishing effort in this fishery were discussed.

ABSTRACT In the Queensland, Australia, scallop fishery, the scallop catch is graded at sea using a specially designed grading machine called a “tumbler.” Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of repeated trawl capture, grading, and discarding on the survival of sublegal saucer scallops Amusium balloti. Scallops were caught within an area closed to commercial fishing and known to contain dense scallop beds. The trawled scallops were randomly divided into 2 groups, tumbled and control, and subjected to up to 4 tumbles and/or trawls before being caged for 2.5 days adjacent to the trawl grounds. Increased levels of both trawling and tumbling were found to decrease significantly the survival of sublegal scallops. Although 83% of scallops survived repeated intensive trawling (4 consecutive tows), survival fell to 64% when scallops were also graded using a commercial tumbler. Survival was high for both tumbled and control sublegal scallops after 1 trawl (97% and 98%, respectively).

Abstract This paper describes the reproductive biology and growth of Ibacus alticrenatus, I. brucei, and I. chacei from the east coast of Queensland, Australia. Reproductive cycles, sizes at maturity, sex ratios, morphological data, egg sizes, brood fecundities, length-frequency distributions, and growth parameters are described. Ibacus chacei numerically dominated both the commercial and research charter samples and were followed by I. brucei and I. alticrenatus in abundance respectively. Seasonal reproductive data indicated that I. brucei and I. chacei have an annual cycle of reproduction, with oviposition and hatching occurring earlier and over a shorter period in I. brucei. Gonadal maturation in ovigerous I. chacei suggested that more than one brood could be produced in a spawning season; however, reproductive activity was geographically restricted. Carapace lengths of ovigerous lobsters ranged 38.2–52.0 mm for I. alticrentatus, 44.6–69.7 mm for I. brucei, and 53.7–76.2 mm for I. chacei. Brood fecundity was size dependent and highest in I. brucei (2049–61,339) but markedly lower in I. chacei (2117–28,793) and I. alticrenatus (1734–14,762). Egg size in all three species was independent of carapace length, positively related to developmental stage, and ranged 0.94–1.29 mm for I. alticrentatus, 0.73–1.01 mm for I. brucei, and 1.02–1.37 mm for I. chacei. Monthly length-frequency distributions for I. chacei displayed marked multi-modality and indicated a prolonged recruitment period with moulting occurring 3–4 times within their first year post-recruitment. Growth curves of I. chacei indicated that females reach sexual maturity 1.7–2 yrs post settlement and that individuals approached their Lmax within 5–7 yrs. These results are discussed in relation to comparisons between each species and other members of the Scyllaridae family, and provide invaluable biological information for the development of sustainable management strategies for Queenslands Ibacus species.

Three species of Australian endemic catsharks (grey spotted catshark Asymbolus analis, orange spotted catshark A. rubiginosus and Australian sawtail shark Figaro boardmani) were collected from the trawl grounds of a highly seasonal commercial fishery off southern Queensland, Australia. Specimens were collected on the mid to outer continental shelf at depths between 78 and 168 m. This study provides the first information on the reproductive biology of these three poorly-known species. Mature female and male A. analis were observed from 455 mm total length (TL), mature female A. rubiginosus from 410 mm TL, mature male A. rubiginosus from 405 mm TL, mature female F. boardmani from 402 mm TL and mature male F. boardmani from 398 mm TL (although a lack of immature specimens precluded more accurate assessments of size at maturity). The reproductive mode of all species was confirmed as single oviparous (carrying only one egg case in each uterus at a time). Ovarian fecundity (the number of vitellogenic follicles) ranged from 7-20 in A. analis, 5-23 in A. rubiginosus and 9-13 in F. boardmani. Several indicators suggest that Asymbolus catsharks off southern Queensland are reproductively active year-round. The proportion of female A. rubiginosus carrying egg cases was highest in spring (60%), intermediate in autumn (50%) and lowest in winter (44%).

This paper describes the fishery and reproductive biology for Linuparus trigonus obtained from trawl fishermen operating off Queensland’s east coast, Australia. The smallest mature female lobster measured 59.8 mm CL, however, 50% maturity was reached between 80 and 85 mm CL. Brood fecundity (BF) was size dependent and ranged between 19,287 and 100,671 eggs in 32 females from 59.8 to 104.3 mm CL. The relationship was best described by the power equation BF = 0.1107*CL to the power of 2.9241 (r to the power of 2 = 0:74). Egg size ranged from 0.96 to 1.12 mm in diameter (mean = 1:02 (+or-) 0:01 mm). Egg weight and size were independent of lobster size. Length frequencies displayed multi-modal distributions.The percentage of female to male lobsters was relatively stable for small size classes (30 to 70 mm CL; 50.0 to 63.6% females), but female proportions rose markedly between 75 and 90 mm (72.2 to 85.4%) suggesting that at the onset of sexual maturity female growth rates are reduced. In size classes greater than 95 mm, males were numerically dominant. A description of the L. trigonus fishery in Queensland is also detailed.

Reproductive variables are provided for batoids regularly taken as by-catch in the east coast otter-trawl fishery on the inner-mid continental shelf off the south-east and central coasts of Queensland, Australia. Total length at maturity (LT50 and 95% c.i.) for the eastern shovelnose ray Aptychotrema rostrata was 639·5 mm (617·6-663·4 mm) for females and 597·3 mm (551·4-648·6 mm) for males. Litter size (n = 9) ranged from nine to 20 (mean ± s.e. = 15·1 ± 1·2). This species exhibited a positive litter size-maternal size relationship. Disc width at maturity (WD50 and 95% c.i.) for the common stingaree Trygonoptera testacea was 162·7 mm (155·8-168·5 mm) for females and 145·9 mm (140·2-150·2 mm) for males. Gravid T. testacea (n = 6) each carried a single egg in the one functional (left) uterus. Disc width at maturity (WD50 and 95% c.i.) for the Kapala stingaree Urolophus kapalensis was 153·7 mm (145·1-160·4 mm) for females and 155·2 mm (149·1-159·1 mm) for males. Gravid U. kapalensis (n = 16) each carried a single egg or embryo in the one functional (left) uterus. A single female yellowback stingaree Urolophus sufflavus carried an embryo in each uterus. A global review of the litter sizes of shovelnose rays (Rhinobatidae) and stingarees (Urolophidae) is provided.

This paper reports on the collection of S. australiensis from the continental shelf off southern Queensland, easter Australia, in the western Central Pacific, documenting for the first time the occurrence of the species outside of eastern Bass Strait.

Post-trawl survival (PTS) is an important metric used in determining the ecological risk posed by prawn (shrimp) trawling on discarded elasmobranchs. Despite this, PTS of elasmobranchs is poorly understood. The present study quantified the PTS of two small batoids caught incidentally by prawn trawlers in southern Queensland, Australia, namely the common stingaree (Trygonoptera testacea) and the eastern shovelnose ray (Aptychotrema rostrata). Field studies using on-board tanks revealed that A. rostrata were more resilient to trawl capture and release than T. testacea. For both species, survival was found to increase with size, whereas increasing time on deck resulted in lower survival. Female T. testacea were found to be more resilient than males, and increased tow duration resulted in lower survival for A. rostrata. The mean (±s.e.m.) PTS for female and male T. testacea was 33.5±6.0 and 17.3±5.5% respectively, compared with a mean PTS for A. rostrata of 86.8±3.2%. The survival estimates derived in the present study provide an insight into the effects of trawling on these species and will improve their ecological risk assessment and management.
