Assessing the collection development need for CD-ROM products

Abstract The following article grew out of a paper presented at the 16th mid-year meeting of the American Society for Information Science, Kings Island, Ohio, May 18, 1987. It was one of four included within a panel entitled “Integration of Optical Disc Products into Library Collections. ” This paper concludes that we are going to spend more money for improved access to existing paper products and incur new peripheral expenses related to housing and providing access to these materials in the electronic format. This picture may change, however, as the type of data included changes from being largely bibliographical to actual information for research.
