Numerical and experimental study of a Few-Mode (FM) Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) suitable for mode division multiplexing (MDM) is reported. Based on numerical simulations, a Few-Mode Erbium Doped Fiber (FM-EDF) has been designed to amplify four mode groups and to equally amplify LP11 and LP21 mode groups with gains greater than 20 dB and with a differential modal gain of less than 1 dB. Experimental results confirmed the simulations with a good concordance. This modal gain equalization is obtained by tailoring the erbium spatial distribution in the fiber core with a ring-shaped profile.

Abstract General properties of solid core photonic bandgap fibers are presented as well as general guidelines, found thanks to numerical investigations, helpful for designing this kind of fibers. We give two examples of applications and a new fiber design with interstitial air holes that lead to a significant reduction of both confinement and bend losses. This design allows the light to be guided in the fiber core thanks to a modified total internal reflection mechanism at long wavelengths and by photonic bandgap at short wavelengths. Furthermore, this new design satisfies the phase index matching condition for either second- or third-harmonic generation between two fundamental modes.

The deposition of pure silica layers using the Outside Vapor Deposition method has been studied. The experimental study focuses on some fabrication parameters that have to be adjusted in order to work with a target temperature optimized for deposition of pure silica compatible with large volume deposition and post-treatments. It is experimentally shown that the optimized soot porous preforms are constituted by homogeneous silica spherical particles of 100 to 110 nm in diameter and have, in this case, densities approximately equal to 0.35 g.cm –3 .

Fiber Bragg Gratings with reflectivity up to 25 dB have been photo-written in the core of a 2D all-solid Photonic Bandgap Fiber without modification of the guiding properties of the fiber. This result is obtained by combining an appropriate glass composition for the high index inclusions constituting the micro-structured cladding and a photosensitive low index core. Couplings of the fundamental core guided mode with cladding modes are investigated and compared to theoretical predictions.

We report on the study of a possible first step integration of mode division multiplexed optical component for single-mode fiber networks. State-of-the-art on few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers is used to integrate the amplification function in a single component, which is expected to save energy in comparison to parallelized active components. So as to limit the impact of modal cross-talk, an elliptical-core few-mode erbium-doped fiber has been used to assemble an amplifier sharing setup for different single mode fibers, using non-degenerate modes. With this simple setup, we show the level of performances that can be reached for cross-talk, gain, differential modal gain and losses and discuss the ways to improve them for a possible integration in a real network.

In this paper we investigate a possible first step upgrade for long-haul optical communications, before Spatial Division Multiplexing is fully ready. State-of-the-art on few-mode EDFA is used to integrate amplification function in a single system.

Er3+-doped fibers amplifying 6 modes over the C-band are analyzed. We show that micro-structuring fiber core permits to tailor the Er3+ distribution, thus making it possible to reach modal and spectral gain equalization.
