We propose weakly-constrained stream and block codes with tunable pattern-dependent statistics and demonstrate that the block code capacity at large block sizes is close to the the prediction obtained from a simple Markov model published earlier. We demonstrate the feasibility of the code by presenting original encoding and decoding algorithms with a complexity log-linear in the block size and with modest table memory requirements. We also show that when such codes are used for mitigation of patterning effects in optical fibre communications, a gain of about 0.5 dB is possible under realistic conditions, at the expense of small redundancy (≈10%).

Nonlinearity plays a critical role in the intra-cavity dynamics of high-pulse energy fiber lasers. Management of the intra-cavity nonlinear dynamics is the key to increase the output pulse energy in such laser systems. Here, we examine the impact of the order of the intra-cavity elements on the energy of generated pulses in the all-normal dispersion mode-locked ring fiber laser cavity. In mathematical terms, the nonlinear light dynamics in resonator makes operators corresponding to the action of laser elements (active and passive fiber, out-coupler, saturable absorber) non-commuting and the order of their appearance in a cavity important. For the simple design of all-normal dispersion ring fiber laser with varying cavity length, we found the order of the cavity elements, leading to maximum output pulse energy.

The impact of the fiber Kerr effect on error statistics in the nonlinear (high power) transmission of the OFDM 16-QAM signal over a 2000 km EDFA-based link is examined. We observed and quantified the difference in the error statistics for constellation points located at three power-defined rings. Theoretical analysis of a trade-off between redundancy and error rate reduction using probabilistic coding of three constellation power rings decreasing the symbol-error rate of OFDM 16-QAM signal is presented. Based on this analysis, we propose to mitigate the nonlinear impairments using the adaptive modulation technique applied to the OFDM 16-QAM signal. We demonstrate through numerical modelling the system performance improvement by the adaptive modulation for the large number of OFDM subcarriers (more than 100). We also show that a similar technique can be applied to single carrier transmission.

We propose the analytical method to estimate the saturation power and small signal gain of Er-doped fiber from the simple experimental measurements. The results may be useful for numerical simulation of fiber laser systems.

We propose a general analytical method for estimation of the saturable absorber output energy as a function of the input energy. The method is based on a representation of the saturable absorber output energy as a series of powers of the recovery time. We also derive a simplified expression of the saturable absorber output energy that gives a good approximation for large input energies. The analytical results are verified by the numerical simulation. The results have been applied to the particular cases of an input function that include the Gaussian input pulse and the hyperbolic secant input pulse. We show that the analytical results can improve the prediction of the output energy in the fiber lasers.

We quantify the error statistics and patterning effects in a 5x 40 Gbit/s WDM RZ-DBPSK SMF/DCF fibre link using hybrid Raman/EDFA amplification. We propose an adaptive constrained coding for the suppression of errors due to patterning effects. It is established, that this coding technique can greatly reduce the bit error rate (BER) value even for large BER (BER > 101). The proposed approach can be used in the combination with the forward error correction schemes (FEC) to correct the errors even when real channel BER is outside the FEC workspace.

We propose specific modulation block codes for weakly-constrained coding and demonstrate that their performance is close to the theoretical limit. We also show that when such codes are used for the mitigation of patterning effects in optical fibre communications, a gain of about 1 dB is possible under realistic conditions, if only at the expense of small redundancy (≈ 10%).
