NOBEL – A Neighborhood Oriented Brokerage ELectricity and Monitoring System

Distributed generation of energy coming from various vendors, even private homes, is a big challenge for tomorrows power management systems that, unlike today, will not dispatch energy centrally or under central control. On the contrary, the production, distribution and management of energy will be treated and optimized in a distributed manner using local data. Even today, parts of the power system are highly nonlinear with fast changing dynamics. It is hard to predict disturbances and undertake countermeasures on time. In existing approaches electricity is distributed to the final users according to its expected estimated demand. Such non-dynamic approaches, are difficult to evolve and can not accommodate rapid changes in the system. By having a cross-layer and open information flow among the different actors involved we can make better and more timely predictions, and inject new dynamics in the system that will lead to better energy management and achieve better energy savings. The NOBEL project is building an energy brokerage system with which individual energy prosumers can communicate their energy needs directly to both large-scale and small-scale energy producers, thereby making energy use more efficient.

SIMON: Integration of ICT Solutions for Mobility and Parking

Alberto Ferreras; José Solaz; Eva María Muñoz; Manuel Serrano; Antonio Marqués; Amparo López; José Laparra

Mobility and parking in urban areas are often difficult for people with disabilities. Obstacles include lack of accessible information on routes, transport alternatives and parking availability, as well as fraud in the use of the specific services intended for these citizens. The SIMON project aims to improve this situation through the integration of different ICT solutions, including a new model for the European Parking Card for disable people with contactless technologies to support user unique identification in existing parking areas whilst preserving privacy. SIMON has also developed solutions for mobility including information, navigation and access to restricted areas.

The PECES Project: Ubiquous Transport Information Systems

Antonio Marqués; Manuel Serrano

Pervasive Computing in Embedded Systems (PECES) is an EU-funded project (FP7-224342-ICT-2007-2) and it is coordinated by ETRA I + D. The project focuses on the development of an innovative comprehensive software layer that enables the seamless cooperation of embedded devices across various smart spaces on a global scale in a context-dependent, secure, and trustworthy manner and it has a special relevance for mobility-related applications. PECES will enable the use of information available in different embedded isolated systems used nowadays in the transport domain (from traffic controllers to traveller information panels). The software provided by the project will help in the development of new cooperative systems.

Pervasive Computing In Transport Embedded Information Systems

Antonio Marqués; Manuel Serrano

The EU-funded project EMMA, coordinated by ETRA I+D, aimed at delivering a comprehensive software layer that enables the seamless cooperation of embedded devices objects in the transport domain across various smart spaces. The objective was to open new prospects in the field of embedded systems for cooperating wireless sensors in order to hide the complexity of the underlying infrastructure. EMMA fosters cost- efficient ambient intelligence systems with optimal performance, high confidence, reduced time to market and faster deployment.
