OBJECTIVESnThe study sought to assess the impact of applying a learning strategy to improve the quality of sample collection during cervical screening by students from the Nursing Degree Program doing social service.nnnMETHODSnThis was a longitudinal, quasi-experimental study with the participation of 23 interns from the Nursing Degree Program at a public university from San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The work assessed knowledge of practical skills in taking cervical cytology tests and the quality of samples before and after applying a learning strategy that included 10 h of theoretical training and 22 h of practices on themes related to sample collection in cervical screening.nnnRESULTSnA statistically significant difference was obtained in improved knowledge (t = -12.8 p<0.001) and practical skills (t = -8.86 p<0.001) after the intervention. The increased percentage of suitable samples from 30.43% to 82.60% was attributed to the application of the learning strategy in the pre- and post-intervention phases (p<0.001).nnnCONCLUSIONSnTraining is effective to improve knowledge and practical skills to collect samples in cervical screening, as well as the quality of the samples for their interpretation.

Objective To evaluate nursing performance in the control of diabetic outpatients of the IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social [Mexican Social Security Institute])-Prospera hospital number 44 in Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Methods This quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study consisted of a sample of 30 nurses recruited from August 2014 to April 2015. A performance observation guide that evaluated administrative, care, teaching, and communication functions was used. Performance was classified as good, fair, and poor by means of descriptive statistics. Results A total of 93.3% of the sample consisted of female certified nurse assistants, 70% with studies at the technician level. The overall measurements of the administrative, care, teaching, and communication functions indicated that 6.7% presented good performance, 40% fair performance, and 53.3% poor performance. Conclusion Care and teaching functions show significant opportunities for improving patient self-care. Nursing performance evaluation provides evidence for the management of services in the diabetes program.

This study was motivated by the aspects lived by people with diabetes and the implications the disease have on their lives. In essence, this study was performed with the purpose of changing the disease from its position of a fact to the position of a phenomenon that needs further clarification. Phenomenology was the framework used in this investigation, with a view to undertand the meaning of living with diabetes. The study location was a health institution in the city of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, where people with diabetes were interviewed and provided statements about their experience. Data analysis permitted the construction of thematic categories, which revealed important facets regarding these peoples existence. The study provided new perspectives for looking beyond the disease, and seeing the person with diabetes within their situational context, thus, showing some paths for health care policies.
