The chemistry of alane — XIII: The reaction of alane and acetonitrile☆

Robert S. Ehrlich; Archie R. Young

The reaction of alane with acetonitrile has been defined. Three different products were isolated: With excess alane [CH3CH2N(AlH2)2]x·NR3 (x=1 or 2) was obtained; with excess acetonitrile yellow, insoluble, polymeric materials were formed containing imino linkages; and when the reagents were present in equimolar quantities, poly(N-ethyliminoalane) was formed.
