This study follows the “umbrella” hypothesis that newspapers compete in layers radiating out from the newspaper(s) published in the central city to those published in distant suburbs. The assumption is that there is more competition between than within layers. A content analysis of four central city dailies in Denver and Detroit with selected surrounding suburban newspapers tests the hypothesis that circulation success in the suburbs is related to certain kinds of content and that if a larger newspaper is successful in these same suburbs there will be similarity of content. But the study found only weak support for this hypothesis.

GRE scores fail to predict completion of graduate programs. The finding of no substantial difference in average quantitative GRE scores is consistent with Lynn’s finding but not completely consistent with Scotton’s that the quantitative score was “a good predictor of getting the degree when the student also had a high undergraduate GPA.”8 Without controlling for undergraduate GPA, we could not compare our results directly with Scotton’s conclusion. That no substantial difference in undergraduate GPAs (both overall and major) emerged is consistent with Lynn’s finding that overall undergraduate GPA was not significantly related either to graduate GPA or to completion of degree. The slight difference in average undergraduate GPAs between Indiana students who completed and did not complete graduate degrees is also consistent with Scotton’s finding that undergraduate GPA “predicts graduate grades and little more.’-

Metro dailies and suburban non-dailies seem to be complementary, not interchangeable, at least in this study of four metros and 28 suburban non-dailies in the Denver and Detroit areas. Metro papers and suburban papers cover different things, which seems to be what readers want: different things from different papers.
