Geo-Relationship between Cancer Cases and the Environment by GIS: A Case Study of Trabzon in Turkey

Tahsin Yomralioglu; Ebru H. Colak; Arif Cagdas Aydinoglu

Cancer is an important health issue in Turkey because it ranks as the second cause of death in the country. Examination of the relationships between the distribution of cancer cases and geo-environmental factors is significant in determining the causes of cancer. In this study, GIS were used to provide data about the distribution of cancer types in Trabzon province, Turkey. To determine the cancer occurrence density, the cancer incidence rates were calculated according to local census data, then a cancer density map was produced, and correlations between cancer types and geographical factors were examined.

Modelling, encoding and transforming of open geographic data to examine interoperability between GIS applications

Arif Cagdas Aydinoglu

The interoperability of geographic data sets is required between geo-information system applications to use geographic data sets effectively. Thus, international standardisation organisation/technical committee 211 standards supporting model-driven architecture were examined to test the ability of producing interoperable geographic data sets. With Turkey case, unified modelling language application schemas were designed for base geographic data themes and encoded to data interchange model based on geography markup language. To test the applicability of the open data models, extract-transform-load (ETL) tools were developed and applied for case applications such as topographic map and web urban atlas. This study gives a methodology and indicates that ETL tools should be created to enable multiple uses of geo-data sets without spending time and labour. However, data model design should be refined and kept as simple as possible because data transformation is laborious to use the models in the applications.

Modelling and publishing geographic data with model-driven and linked data approaches: case study of administrative units in Turkey

Arif Cagdas Aydinoglu; Abdullah Kara

Abstract Geographic data infrastructure (GDI) initiatives commonly use the Unified Modeling Language (UML) of model-driven architecture (MDA) and Geospatial Web services (GWS) for publishing geographic data. Ontologies have also been employed for constructing GDI in recent years and the linked data approach can be used for publishing geographic data. This study aims to examine MDA and linked data approaches in modelling and publishing geographic data sets with the example of the administrative units of Turkey. It has been concluded that the linked data approach provides more opportunities for semantic interoperability and enables more reusable and accessible administrative unit data sets with related data sets on the Web.

Planning of parking places on transportation infrastructure by geographic information techniques

Arif Cagdas Aydinoglu; Metin Senbil; Deniz Saglam; Selcuk Demir

Considering the increased number of vehicles every day, parking supplies should meet parking demands on transportation infrastructure. Irregular construction and excessive population growth in urban areas required re-planning and site selection of parking places. In this study, an analysis algorithm was developed to determine location-based parking demand by using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques. After calculating parking demand and supply balance, the location-allocation techniques of network analysis were implemented to determine the best locations of parking, depending on parking demand. These processing tools were tested for an urban area. As a result, an innovative data processing method was developed to determine the best locations of car parking.
