There is a growing interest on the research on the structural safety under fire in Brazil, but some aspects that still need discussion. The simulation and laboratory evaluation of structural elements under a fire situation is one of those aspects, especially regarding the testing methodology. The Brazilian standard NBR 5628:2001 needs to be reviewed in order to adapt international methodologies to our reality or even to establish new methodologies, considering variables that are relevant in the local context. This paper provides a starting point for those discussions, by gathering the parameters that that guide the methodological procedures for the evaluation of structural elements in natural scale, under load, and in a fire situation. Relevant parameters, such as the minimum dimensions of the elements to be tested, rates of temperature rise with time, infrastructure for tests, instrumentation of the structural elements, among others, have been evaluated based on current national and international standardization. It is hoped that this work will make contributions for the future revision of the NBR 5628:2001 standard, and encourage Brazilian researchers to join this new and arduous research theme.

The composite structures formed by the association of steel profiles with concrete have shown to be an advantageous alternative, improving the behavior of the steel structures concerning their load capacity, stiffness, and durability, under fire conditions. The concrete-filled tubular columns have become an attractive alternative for the civil construction area, offering constructive and esthetic advantages. The Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-2, 2002) and ABNT NBR 14323:2013 show simple methods for the design of the composite columns under fire situations. Nevertheless, these present limitations in their application. In addition, regarding the determination of the temperature field in the cross section, the Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-2, 2002) describes a specific procedure for columns with section profile covered with concrete, but it is neglectful about concrete-filled tubular columns. The goal of this paper is to present a simplified procedure to determine the temperature registered in concrete-filled steel columns and apply the procedure to columns with square section tubes. The temperature distribution was determined by simulations using the computer package ABAQUS (Dessault Systemes Simulia Corp. 2013). After the studies, it has been considered that the procedure described in this paper is an effective alternative for the determination of the field’s temperature and for the application of the design of the concrete-filled columns under fire conditions.

This paper presents the parameters that guide the design of laboratory equipment to evaluate slabs and beams, in full-scale load, and in fire. Parameters of interest such as the internal dimensions, rate of temperature rise according to the time, infrastructure for installation of equipment, among others, are evaluated based on national and international standards. In the end, it is hoped that this report about the exercise of design and construction of the first horizontal Brazilian furnace encourage the future construction of this kind of equipment, helping national and international researchers in the area to start a similar, and arduous, task.

This study presents the results of an experimental investigation in characterizing the properties of cement soil block masonry using cement-soil mortars and PVA glue. The study deals with the scantily explored area of tensile bond strength of soil-cement block masonry using cement-soil mortars and PVA glue. Flexural bond strength of masonry has been determined by testing stack-bonded prisms using a bond wrench test set-up. The study clearly demonstrates the superiority of cement-soil mortar over other conventional mortar such as cement mortar. The results of this study can be conveniently used to select a proportion for cement-soil mortar or PVA glue proportion for cement soil block masonry structures.

In this paper the technique of strengthening reinforced concrete beams to prevent the bending phenomenon by increasing the thickness in the compressed chord region is evaluated. Two reinforced concrete beams with identical longitudinal and transversal dimensions and fixings, were molded. After twenty-eight days, one of these beams was reinforced with a layer of high-resistant concrete in the compressed region. A third beam was single-stage molded using both types of concrete and had the final characteristics of the previously reinforced beam. Finally, the rupture behavior of the three beams was analyzed, proving the efficiency of the reinforcement technique proposal.
