As an introduction to the article, the conceptual origins of a compact city will be outlined considering the different variables involved. How these variables have been incorporated into such a widespread concept in the field of contemporary urbanism will be explained. Secondly, a research project developed in the outlying urban areas of Alicante which links residential density with variables of mobility will be presented. Finally, new research lines will be proposed to shed light on the current problems posed by the forms of growth and development of cities.

Brexit Announcement: Immediate Impact on British Tourism in Spain

José Francisco Perles-Ribes; Ana Belén Ramón-Rodríguez; Armando Ortuño Padilla

The United Kingdom constitutes the principal tourist source market for Spain. This research note analyzes the immediate impact of the Brexit on British tourism in Spain using the Bayesian structural time series models framework. The results obtained show that between July 2016 and September 2017, Brexit has not produced any initial negative effect on the arrival of British tourists or on their spending in Spain.

High Speed Rail Passenger Profile in Sun and Beach Tourism Destinations: The Case of Alicante (Spain)

Armando Ortuño Padilla; David Bautista Rodríguez; Patricia Fernández Aracil; Graciela Fernández Morote; Juan Carlos Sánchez Galiano

This paper aims to study and highlight the profile of the high speed rail (HSR) passenger in the case of the well-known sun and beach destination of Alicante, located in the Southeast of Spain. This region, which is directly connected with Madrid, differs from others because of its warm and sunny weather. The province is a tourist destination for both Spanish citizens and foreigners. However, the studies on the dynamics of the corridor towards Madrid and Alicante regarding HSR are quite recent and it is not possible to draw final conclusions about its impact on tourist mobility.

A case study of identify importance of land use planning in road safety, Benidorm

Jairo Casares Blanco; Juan Carlos Sánchez Galiano; Patricia Fernández Aracil; Armando Ortuño Padilla

This research analyses how urban form, land use and urban density, may influence the incidence of traffic-related crashes injuries and deaths. It begins with a theoretical overview of studies which deal with the study of the relationship between urban patterns and road safety. Next, it details the development of a database of crash incidence and urban form at the district level for the city of Benidorm (Alicante, Spain) in 2010. Subsequently, it is developed a negative binomial approach for intra-city motor vehicle crash analysis. One-year crash data for Benidorm (the fourth largest tourism destination of Spain, after Barcelona, Madrid and San Bartolome de Tirajana, and exclusively tourist-oriented city) are analyzed using a geographic information system (GIS) to generate relevant inputs for the analysis. In general, the study finds that a strong land use mix results on fewer road accidents, whereas accidents are more common but less severe in areas of high urban density. Finally, pedestrian accidents research showed that rural and low density environment is related to an important road accident numbers unlike tourism-oriented zones, much more safe for them. Based on these findings, the paper discusses the implications for urban design practice. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.3429

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LIBERALIZATION PROCESS OF PASSENGERS RAILWAY MARKET IN SPAIN AND ENGLAND

Graciela Fernández Morote; Armando Ortuño Padilla; Patricia Fernández Aracil

This article provides an overview of the privatization of railway passengers market in Spain through a background to the most relevant cases studies in Europe, particularly the liberalization process in England. The English case study is a paradigmatic example to assess how the liberalization process was developed and its effect in the present. This assessment has been undertaken to analyse the railway franchise structure, ticketing measures, role of national and regional authorities, etc. and possible analogies to be adapted to the case of Spain. Firstly, this article reviews the origin of the privatization of the railway market in both Spain and England, describing every phase of the liberalization and the success of every stage. Secondly, a critical approach assessment exposes those market failures of the liberalization process in England that caused negative impacts on society. In addition, the role of the Government is analysed to measure their implication in order to solve that situation. Furthermore, the paper expounds a wide analysis of the rail ticketing in England, its effects on increased passenger number. Finally, this article proposes some measures to be followed on the privatization of passenger rail market in Spain, as well as some key concepts to guarantee its success as taken from the case studies that have been reviewed.
