Studying the History of Pre-modern Zoology by Extracting Linked Zoological Data from Mediaeval Texts and Reasoning on It

Molka Tounsi; Catherine Faron Zucker; Arnaud Zucker; Serena Villata; Elena Cabrio

In this paper we first present the international multidisciplinary research network Zoomathia, which aims at studying the transmission of zoological knowledge from Antiquity to Middle Ages through varied resources, and considers especially textual information, including compilation literature such as encyclopaedias. We then present a preliminary work in the context of Zoomathia consisting in i extracting pertinent knowledge from mediaeval texts using Natural Language Processing NLP methods, ii semantically enriching semi-structured zoological data and publishing it as an RDF dataset and its vocabulary, linked to other relevant Linked Data sources, and iii reasoning on this linked RDF data to help epistemologists, historians and philologists in their analysis of these ancient texts. This paper is an extended and updated version ofi¾ź[13].

La sexualité grecque dans le kaléidoscope animal

Arnaud Zucker

The greek sexuality in the animal kaleidoscop. ; This paper focuses on the representations of the animal sexuality in the Greek zoological literature, especially in Aristotle. They reveal the construction of the human eroticism. Marked by a common physiological situation but also by a moral distinction, the human practice differs, on the ideologic level, by the place granted in sexuality to reproduction and pleasure. In the animal mirror appears sharply, as a reflection, the Greek choice of an antinatural erotic.

La castration chez Aristote : une théorie sans complexe

Arnaud Zucker

Castration in the Aristotelian corpus. ; The castration is considered as a sexual inversion and, since only the emasculation (animal or human) seems to hold attention of the philosopher, it means feminization. An overview of the principles of the sexual differentiation in Aristotles theory helps to understand the various consequences of this mutilation which, by affecting the speriua, influences profoundly the sexual identity (as much physical as psychic) and identifies the eunuch with the mutilated male the woman is by nature.
