Speedtronic®---Tomorrow's Analog and Digital Gas Turbine Control System

Arne Loft

This paper describes General Electrics new solid-state analog and digital gas turbine control, protection, and sequential system. It outlines the functional objectives and elaborates on the design philosophy applied to obtain maximum starting and running reliability, while maintaining a very high degree of fail safeness for the prime mover. It shows in graph and diagrammatic form the basic functions to be performed and schematically how these functions are accomplished. It describes and shows the physical arrangement of the system. The qualification program and operating experience to date are outlined.

The Two-Shaft Industrial Gas Turbine Goes to Sea — Again

Arne Loft

This paper gives a brief summary of the experience of the first industrial gas turbine ship, the John Sergeant, then enumerates the basic characteristics of the heavy duty gas turbine and the philosophy employed in the design. The unique features of the second-stage variable area turbine nozzle, its effects on performance, and particularly the flexible control it affords in conjunction with the controllable and reversible pitch propeller, are discussed. The philosophy of design of the solid state control, protection and sequential systems are outlined, as are the experiences to date with a number of industrial gas turbines of the two-shaft, off-shore and heavy fuel varieties. It concludes by discussing some of the considerations for burning residual fuel and boil-off from liquefied natural gas.Copyright

20,000 Hours With Analog Computer Controlled Gas Turbines in Utility and Industry

Arne Loft

This paper outlines the design of a new solid state, analog computer for control of gas turbines. It emphasizes some of the features built in to give it all-out reliability, particularly for process and marine applications and shows some of the special tests performed in the factory and in the field. It concludes with the experience gathered during initial installation, and during over 20,000 hr of operation on several units for utility and pipeline application.Copyright
