The Significance of Nonlinearity in the Natural Sciences

Orbis Scientiae; Behram N. Kursunoglu; Mou-Shan Chen; Joseph Hubbard; Michel Mille; Mario Rasetti; Arnold Perlmutter; Linda F. Scott

A review of some recent work on the collective coordinate approach to perturbation expansion about soliton solutions is presented. Consistent formulation of the method in framework of the Feynman path integral quantization procedure is described. As an illustrative application we discuss in detail a perturbation expansion for scattering of solitons. INTRODUCTION· After the relevance of classical soliton solutions to the quantum theory was established at the semi-classical level(l), the main problem remaining was to develop a systematic perturbation expansion about these solutions The straightforward way of doing this, which consists of shifting the field by the classical solution, runs into serious difficulties. Namely, by the shift various symmetries (like translational invariance) get broken * Research sponsored by the Energy Research and Development Administration Grant No. E(11-1)-2220.

Information processing in biological systems

Orbis Scientiae; Behram Kurșunoğlu; Stephan L. Mintz; Arnold Perlmutter; Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac

This volume presents frontier research in information processing related to a variety of biological systems, including small assemblies of neurons in the cortex and large-scale metabolic systems; the statistics, dynamics, and phase transitions of stochastic information processing; and the microscopic-macroscopic interface in biological information processing. Physical principles and proteinoid experiments are discussed regarding the emergence of life and information and cause. The final paper offers a design for a one-dimensional brain.
