Abstract:u2002 Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are ubiquitously used materials in everyday life (e.g. paints, household products and plastic goods). However, despite the wide array of common applications, their pathogenetic role was also suggested under certain conditions (e.g. pulmonary neoplasias and lung fibrosis). From a dermatological point of view, it is also of great importance that TiO2 also serves as a physical photoprotective agent in sunscreens and is widely used in various cosmetic products. However, the effect of TiO2 on human cutaneous functions is still unknown. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated the in vivo penetration of TiO2 via human skin transplanted to immunodeficient mice and, furthermore, we measured the in vitro effects of nanoparticles on various functional properties of numerous epidermal and dermal cells in culture. Hereby, using various nuclear microscopy methods, we provide the first evidence that TiO2 nanoparticles in vivo do not penetrate through the intact epidermal barrier. However, we also report that TiO2, when exposed directly to cell cultures in vitro, exerts significant and cell‐type dependent effects on such cellular functions as viability, proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation. Therefore, our novel findings will hopefully inspire one to systemically explore in future, clinically oriented trials whether there is indeed a risk from micronized TiO2‐containing products on skin with an impaired stratum corneum barrier function.

Abstract Incrusted pottery samples from the territory of Hungary were analyzed by micro-PIXE technique. Measurements were executed on the front and back side of the samples and inside the incrustations too. We succeeded to group the pottery from different regions and periods by the composition of the ornament. It was concluded that the elemental composition of the ornament may be characteristic to the provenance of the pottery. In case of samples from Vors-Mariaasszonysziget the presence of a kind of grit in the incrustations with high calcium and phosphorus content was established. The material of the grit is presumably bone. Samples from other archaeological localities can be described by incrustations with different compositions. Incrustations in the samples from Balatonfuzo are presumably composed of limestone (CaCO 3 ), from Baradla cave (Aggtelek) probably of white clay paste (kaolinite). It was also concluded that the red color of the ornaments of some sample from Baradla cave is caused by hematite.

Abstract Experimental studies of the slowing down of 1 H, 4 He, 7 Li, 11 B, 12 C, 14 N, 16 O, 23 Na, 27 Al and 28 Si ions in CR-39 nuclear track etch material in the ion energy range 0.25–2.8 MeV/u are presented. The ion stopping powers obtained are compared to the predictions of two recent semiempirical models for calculating ion stopping powers. The predictions are found to clearly underestimate the observed stopping powers for 7 Li, 11 B, 12 C, 23 Na, 27 Al and 28 Si ions.

Abstract The 34 S+ α system has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Excitation functions of the 34 S( α , γ ) 38 Ar reaction have been measured over the alpha bombarding energy range E α = 3.4–4.4 MeV. The low background provided by the 100% enriched (implanted) target allowed one to observe 10 new resonances, some of them attributed previously to the 32 S contamination of the target. Decay schemes, spin-parity values, reduced electromagnetic transition probabilities and resonance strenghts have been determined. A semimicroscopic algebraic 34 S+ α cluster model has been used to describe the new resonances together with the low-lying states of the 38 Ar nucleus. This analysis indicates that the J π = 1 − resonances may not be good candidates for the first state of a K π = 0 − band predicted to start in the E x ⋍ 10–11 MeV region.
