Retail Store Spatial Affinities

Heterogeneous and homogeneous data sets are examined to determine whether retail store spatial affinities exist within the central business districts of a sample of American cities. Use is made of a test designed to identify statistically significant spatial associations. The findings of the study suggest that there are undoubtedly some significant affinities between business types, but that they are very limited in number and not constant from city to city. When data from the cities are combined, four groups are shown to emerge, the most prominent displaying a strong bond between womens clothing, womens accessory, and variety stores.

Some Current Concepts, Techniques, and Recent Findings in Urban Geography.

Abstract The question is posed: “Are there good reasons to teach urban geography to secondary school and college students?” The question is answered positively by briefly exploring (1) the concepts of wave theory analog, the critical isochrone, filtering, and equifinality; (2) the techniques of analysis of computer mapping, probability models, and remote sensing; and (3) some recent findings. The findings pertain to the meaning of changing population density gradients, the suburbanization of industry, journey-to-work and residential mobility, and patterns of land use.
