VoIP call over WLAN with Bluetooth headset multiradio interoperability solutions

Arto Palin; Mauri Honkanen

The local wireless networking techniques are becoming more and more popular in mobile terminals nowadays. Even so that wireless LAN (e.g. IEEE 802.11b) and Bluetooth solutions operating at the 2.4 GHz ISM band can be found in the same device. This enables new kind of usage possibilities and applications from which the most challenging ones, from interoperability point of view, are those that require simultaneous real-time operation over these links. One good example of this kind of service is a voice over IP (VoIP) call over the WLAN to the terminal with a Bluetooth headset. In this paper problems regarding different receiver architectures are presented and solutions for optimized Bluetooth usage are considered

EasyGroups: binding mobile devices for collaborative interactions

Andrés Lucero; Tero Jokela; Arto Palin; Viljakaisa Aaltonen; Jari Nikara

We present a touch and proximity based method for binding a group of mobile devices into an ecosystem for collaborative interactions. We aim to provide a seamless user experience by integrating the binding method with the application start-up flow. Our method also determines the order of the devices, allowing implementation of spatial interactions.

Network and content aware information management

Sergey Boldyrev; Ian Oliver; Ronald Brown; Juha-Matti Tuupola; Arto Palin; Antti Lappeteläinen

The presented approach addresses the problem of query and persistent query (subscription) resolution, taking into consideration distribution across multi-domains, network infrastructure and content management. This approach is particularly suitable for information-centric and cloud computing applications based around a mobile-device infrastructure.

Bluetooth Host Protocol Usage Over the Ultra Wideband Radio

Arto Palin; Jukka Reunamäki; Juha Salokannel; Jussi Ylanen

This paper presents an implementation example for placing Bluetooth (BT) host protocol over the WiMedia ultra wideband (UWB) physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers. The adaptation layer is operating below the Bluetooth host controller interface (HCI), hence offering a host interface identical to Bluetooth towards the host. Some points have been identified for Bluetooth and WiMedia multimode operation, where further specification effort is needed

The location graph: towards a symbolic location architecture for the web

Vlad Stirbu; Petri Selonen; Arto Palin

In this paper we outline a unified architecture for representing locations of people, places and things in real or virtual worlds, called realms, on the web. Our architecture is based on the location graph that encodes web-level containment and connectedness relationships between locations. The architecture provides an information processing model that allows realm independent queries such as position, range and path, and realm specific queries, such as distance. We present existing systems that are enablers for the proposed architecture. With this architecture we enable a common way to develop location based services and applications across real or virtual realms, avoiding fragmentation.

FollowMe: A practical approach for bootstrapping consumer smart space applications

Vlad Stirbu; Arto Palin

This paper describes our middleware that enables devices to join on demand a common network environment to realize a smart space application scenario. We describe the architecture overview and a practical implementation scenario in which three devices are involved in a multi-device smart space application. The solution simplifies the smart space infrastructure discovery phase when the the user enters into the physical smart environment.
