Thermal deformation of the resonator of a solid-state laser

Deformation of the resonator of a solid-state laser due to nonuniform heating of the active material is considered. The deformation of cylindrical neodymium glass specimens was studied experimentally. Substantial double refraction was found to occur in the specimens under optical pumping.
