Assessment of Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of Heartland Forgiveness Scale

Aslı Bugay; Ayhan S. Demir; Raquel Delevi

The current study investigated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS). The Turkish version of the HFS, the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were administered to 796 Turkish university students (430 women, 366 men) with a mean age of 20.6 yr. (SD = 2.1). Internal consistency reliability was calculated and Cronbach alpha coefficients ranged between .71 and .82. Criterion validity (Pearson correlation) between the HFS and other scales ranged from −.09 to .34. Additionally, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess the fit of the standard three-factor solution of the HFS. The results suggested that the Turkish version of the HFS had adequate internal consistency, criterion validity, and reflected the standard three-factor structure, indicating that it can be reliably used to measure forgiveness among a Turkish sample.

Understanding Change in Romantic Relationship Expectations of International Female Students from Turkey

Raquel Delevi; Aslı Bugay

In the light of grounded theory, the authors explored change in romantic relationship expectations of international students. Twelve female graduate students from Turkey were interviewed and several themes were identified explaining the presence and absence of change in participants’ attitudes toward romantic relationships. The findings are discussed in relation to acculturation and direction for future research is presented.

Reconciliation Sentiment, Forgiveness, and Mental Health Among Genocide Victims

Immaculée Mukashema; Aslı Bugay; Etienne Mullet

In this chapter, a set of studies conducted by the authors in post-genocide Rwanda and post-civil war Angola is reported. These studies (a) examine the conceptualizations people living in these countries have regarding reconciliation sentiment, (b) quantitatively assess the relationship between reconciliation sentiment and mental health in a group of victims and in a group of perpetrators of the genocide in Rwanda, and, (c) assess the link between forgivingness – the disposition to forgive on a daily basis – and the reconciliation process. They show that the people in Rwanda and Angola have articulated conceptualizations regarding the nature of reconciliation sentiment, and that these conceptualizations are consistent with the way victims personally experience reconciliation. Only one type of reconciliation sentiment, the one corresponding to a renewed capacity to live together, hear each other, work together, and to forge compromises on a daily basis, is associated with mental health. Unconditional forgivingness appears to be a strong promoter of this reconciliation sentiment.

Turkish Version of the Dyadic Almost Perfect Scale Reliability and Validity

Aslı Bugay; Melek Kalkan; Rakel Delevi

The present study examined the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Dyadic Almost Perfect Scale (DAPS). The Turkish version of DAPS and Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS) was administered to 263 (157 female and 104 male) Turkish university students and 2 participants didn’t specify their gender. Internal reliability was calculated and Cronbach’s α coefficients ranged between .87 and .90. Criterion validity (Pearson correlation) between the DAPS and the MPS ranged from .27 to .50. Additionally, a confirmatory factor analysis result revealed good model fit indices for the three-factor model of the DAPS. The findings suggested that the Turkish version of DAPS can be reliably used to measure participants’ expectations for their partners or significant others among a Turkish sample.

Measuring the differences in pairs' marital forgiveness scores: construct validity and links with relationship satisfaction.

Aslı Bugay

This study examined the reliability and validity of a Turkish version for the Marital Dispositional Forgiveness Scale (MDFS). 104 married couples (M age = 36.6 yr., SD = 9.4) living in Turkey completed the Turkish versions of the MDFS and the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). Cronbachs coefficients α for negative dimension (wives =. 82, husbands =. 80) and positive dimension (wives =. 80, husbands = .79) were adequate. A correlation between the MDFS and RAS scores indicated significant associations, stronger for the positive dimension than the negative dimension, supporting the external validity of the MDFS.
