Nurses' daily life: gender relations from the time spent in hospital

Audrey Vidal Pereira

Audrey Vidal Pereira; Simone Santos Oliveira; Lúcia Rotenberg

Sociological studies point out a malaise resulting from the use of time in contemporary societies. The present study aimed at developing a device that combines a quantitative instrument on the use of time, with a qualitative interview technique, seeking to reveal possible relations between time and health. A field research was conducted with nurses of a hospital in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. The subjects registered the length of time activities took to be carried out during an entire week in an activity notebook adapted from time use diaries. Interviews were inspired in self-confrontation, as workers observed a coloured image that describes time taken from the register of activities. The device allowed investigate how workers perceive this time and how they relate it to health, considered in an ample sense. Among the issues brought up by the group as source of discomfort and physical malaise, are the overcharge of professional work and acknowledgement of too much time for the others that are linked to too little time for oneself with a strong component in gender relations. The strength of this device as investigative path of relations of time and health indicates its adequacy in studies with other groups of workers.Sociological studies point out a malaise resulting from the use of time in contemporary societies. The humanized care has ample character and involves a set of knowledge, practices and attitudes that are intended not only to promote the delivery, but also a healthy birth and the prevention of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, with the beginning prenatally. Ensuring that the health team performs proven beneficial procedures for the woman and the newborn, which avoids unnecessary interventions that preserve their privacy and autonomy, since birth is a physiological event, considered one of the most important events of life. In the course of history, with the transition between home and hospital birth, became effective the biomedical model of obstetric care. The childbirth became a hospital-centered event, promoted by intense medicalization and surgical routines, taking the mothers domain during this process. Thus it is essential for change to occur in the biomedical model, essentially technical, to one that values the social and cultural aspects of pregnancy and childbirth for women / families have the experience of a truly humanizing delivery. This study aims to: Discuss the perception of women on maternity care received during the birth process; analyze the perception of women on maternity care received during labor, delivery and birth. This is an integrative review of literature that sought to answer the following question: What is the perception of women about the care they received during labor, delivery and birth? The sources of information were: Web of Science, SCOPUS, PUBMED, LILACS, SciELO via Web of Science, IBECS e PsycINFO. The time frame was from the year of 2010. The final sample consisted of 20 articles. As regards the study types of articles predominated in qualitative approach studies descriptive and exploratory (90%). The synthesis of the studies analyzed shows a remarkable progress in the quality of care delivery and birth, as evidenced by the predominance of satisfaction of women in relation to maternity care, however, through the detailed analysis of some studies , it was observed in some institutions disqualification of care provided to women in the birth process and inadequate hospital routines that ignore scientific evidence. It was concluded that differences in the positioning of women in relation to assistance provided by professionals stressed the importance of identifying and considering contextual issues and individual preferences of mothers in childbirth care
