Chemical reaction rates of quasi-free electrons in non-polar liquids. The equilibrium CO2 + e− CO2−☆

The forward and reverse rates of the reaction CO2 + e− CO2− were determined in tetramethylsilane, neopentane and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane as a function of temperature. The forward reaction is exothermic in solution but the equilibrium constant shifts over four orders of magnitude with changes in solvent. The change in entropy for the forward reaction is approximately the same (−44 cal/mol degree) in the three solvents.

Ionization of Liquids by Radiation: Measurement by a Clearing Field

A method has been developed for determining the yield of free ions formed by irradiation of a liquid with high-energy x-rays. Contrary to expectation, branched-chain paraffins produce many more free ions than straight-chain paraffins do, and the ether 1,4-dioxane produced only a third as many free ions as its hydrocarbon analog, cyclohexane.

Determination of the Energy Level V0 of Electrons in Liquid Argon over a Range of Densities

Abstract The energy level V0 of electrons injected into liquid argon was determined over the range of temperatures and densities in which the electron mobility passes through a maximum. A minimum in V0 was found, not at the density of the mobility maximum as expected, but at a somewhat higher density.
