Background and Aim: Apoptosis plays a crucial role in glomerulonephritis (GN) as a regulatory mechanism and is controlled by various molecules including Fas antigen, Bcl‐2 and p53 oncoproteins. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the correlation between the expression of these molecules and clinical and laboratory data in different types of GN.

OBJECTIVE To assess the diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in ovarian lesions. STUDY DESIGN Sixty-two fine needle aspirations of varied ovarian masses were performed between January 2000 and February 2003. Aspiration material was obtained from fresh tissues at the time of frozen section before dissection of the specimens. The slides were evaluated by a pathologist who was blinded to the gross findings and histopathologic diagnosis. RESULTS A total of 62.9% of cases were assessed as malignant and 30.6% as benign. Two false positive and 2 false negative cases occurred. In our series the overall sensitivity and specificity were 95.1% and 90.4%, respectively. Seven benign and 15 malignant lesions could be subclassified specifically. CONCLUSION We studied excised specimens, but since ovarian masses are reachable by laparoscopically and ultrasonographically guided aspiration, FNAC can be used for diagnoses of these lesions. If a multidisciplinary approach can be carried out in patients with ovarian lesions, cytopathologic interpretation can provide optimum benefits.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a diagnostic tool used in the clinical workup of solitary thyroid nodules; however, differential cytologic diagnosis of these nodules often is challenging. With the goal of identifying cytologic findings that could improve predictions regarding the presence of neoplastic lesions, the authors performed a retrospective review of cases in which FNAC led to diagnoses of solitary cellular nodules or cellular microfollicular lesions at two university hospitals. FNAC smears associated with cases for which surgical specimens subsequently were obtained were reviewed. FNAC accurately detected follicular neoplasms in 76% of cases at one hospital and in 67% of cases at the other. In the current report, the cytologic findings made in these cases are reevaluated, and the potential diagnostic contribution of available clinical data is discussed. Cancer (Cancer Cytopathol) 2004.

BackgroundThe metastasis of papillary thyroid carcinoma to the parapharyngeal space is rare and discussed in the English literature before. Encountering a parapharyngeal mass with cystic appearance on imaging, one should rule out thyroid malignancy as differential diagnosis.Case presentationThe case presented here is a 22-year-old woman who was referred to our clinic with complaints of painless neck mass, dysphagia and hoarseness for two years. After radiologic and pathological examination, the mass thought to be relevant with the thyroid gland. Peroperatively, the tumor was found to originate from the superior pole of the right thyroid gland, with a narrow stalk, and extended following the neurovascular bundle to the lower part of the parapharyngeal space. The bulk was removed via transservical approach with total thyroidectomy.ConclusionThe occurrence of the follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma in the parapharyngeal space is extremely rare. The management of this rare case was discussed with the review of literature.

Leukemias are systemic hematopoietic neoplasias and not infrequently cause ocular findings. Serous retinal detachment (SRD) is one of these manifestations and even may be the first sign of the underlying leukemia. Here we reported a case with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) presenting with SRD and discussed the clinical importance and therapeutic options.

Aims. c‐erbB‐2 expression has been found to be an important prognostic parameter in various types of tumors, but the role played by this oncoprotein in thyroid tumors is still controversial. This study is designed to investigate c‐erbB‐2 expression in different types of thyroid tumors. Methods. c‐erbB‐2 protein over‐expression was studied immunohistochemically (IHC) in 68 paraffin‐embedded thyroid tumors (12 follicular adenomas, 20 papillary carcinomas, 20 follicular carcinomas, eight medullary carcinomas, eight anaplastic carcinomas), diagnosed at the Pathology Department of Cukurova University. Results. No expression of c‐erbB‐2 was found in anaplastic carcinomas, but 50% of the papillary carcinomas showed a cytoplasmic staining pattern and 45% had a mixed staining pattern (cytoplasmic and membranous patterns). Eight (40%) of the 20 follicular carcinomas showed a mixed cytoplasmic/membranous staining pattern and three (15%) showed only cytoplasmic reactivity. Cytoplasmic immunoreactivity was detectable for c‐erbB‐2 in six out of eight (75%) medullary carcinomas. Finally, seven cases of 12 (58%) follicular adenomas showed cytoplasmic staining. Conclusions. Investigation of the exact role of c‐erbB‐2 in thyroid tumors requires further studies, and the different patterns of immunostaining may be helpful for determination of prognosis as is the case in breast carcinoma.

Purpose. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic concordance characteristics of oral cavity lesions by comparing the clinical diagnosis of the lesions with the histopathologic diagnosis. Material and Method. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the patients, who were admitted with oral cavity pathology and underwent biopsy procedure between 2007 and 2011. The oral cavity lesions were classified into 6 different groups as odontogenic cysts, nonodontogenic cysts, odontogenic tumors, nonodontogenic tumors, malignant tumors, and precancerous lesions in accordance with the 2005 WHO classification. The diagnoses were also recategorized into 3 groups expressing prognostic implications as benign, precancerous, and malignant. The initial clinical diagnoses were compared with the histopathologic diagnoses. Data were analyzed statistically. Results. A total of 2718 cases were included. Histopathologic diagnosis did not match the clinical diagnosis in 6.7% of the cases. Nonodontogenic tumors and malignant tumors had the highest misdiagnosis rates (11.5% and 9%, resp.), followed by odontogenic tumors (7.7%), precancerous lesions (6.9%), and odontogenic cysts (4.4%). Clinicians were excelled in diagnosis of benign and precancerous lesions in clinical setting. Conclusion. The detailed discordance characteristics for each specific lesion should be considered during oral pathology practice to provide early detection without delay.

Adenoma is the most frequent type of gallbladder (GB) neoplasm; however, GB neoplasms are unusual and unsuspected diagnoses in childhood. The average patient age is 50.5±16.3 years. We present a case of tubulopapillary adenoma of the gallbladder in a 3-year-old girl. She was admitted to the hospital with a 6-month history of abdominal pain and nausea and vomiting. Ultrasonography (USG) revealed an echogenic soft tissue lesion in the lumen of the GB. She underwent cholecystectomy. A tubulopapillary adenoma and adenomatous hyperplasia of the GB were diagnosed histologically. According to the literature, this is the youngest patient found to have gallbladder adenoma.
