Enhancement of Estimation Method on the Land T-P Pollutant Load in TMDLs Using L-THIA

In this study, the uncertainty analysis of present land pollutant load estimation with simplified land category in TMDLs was performed and the enhanced method for land pollutant load estimation with level II land cover consisting of 23 categories was suggested, which was verified by L-THIA model. For land TP load estimation in Jinwi stream basin, the result of comparison between existing method with simplified land category (Scenario 1) and enhanced method with level II land cover (Scenario 2) showed high uncertainty in existing method. TP loads estimated by Scenario 2 for land covers included in the site land category were in the range of 3.45 to 56.69 kg/day, in which TP loads differed by sixteen times as much among them. For application of scenario 2 to TMDLs, Land TP loads were estimated by matching level II land cover to 28 land categories in serial cadastral map (Scenario 3). In order to verify accuracy of TP load estimation by scenario 3, the simulation result of L-THIA was compared with that and the difference between the two was as little as 10%. The result of this study is expected to be used as primary data for accurate estimation of land pollutant load in TMDLs.

The effect of total maximum daily loads (TMDL) program on water quality improvement in the Geum River basin, Korea

AbstractIn this study, an analysis using nonparametric statistical methods was conducted to assess the effect of Korean total maximum daily load (TMDL) program on the improvement of water quality in the Geum River basin, Korea. The result of analyzing the trend of long-term BOD change from 2003 to 2012 by seasonal Mann–Kendall test showed that there was no significant change (GR-1, GS-1, MH-1) or a trend of increase (GR-2) in “water quality improvement plan area,” whereas a trend of decrease was observed in “implementation plan area” (GR-3, GR-4, GR-5, GS-2, MS-2). The period of TMDL implementation was divided into four time sections, and the BOD in each time section was compared with the others using the Kruskal–Wallis test. Compared with pre-TMDL stage, the effect of water quality improvement did not appear in the early first stage but appeared first in the tributaries, Gap Stream (GS-2) and Miho Stream (MS-2) in the late first stage of TMDL. Estimation of Unit Loads Generation for Swine Wastewater by Cage Test

To evaluate the unit load generation and discharge, pig cage test was conducted. Feed intake, drink amount, and urine generation increased growth stage (heavy weight) of the pig more great. However, the sum of the urine and manure did not show a significant difference in the growth stages of pigs. Because of the limit of the experiment, e.g., research period, high pigpen temperature, breed-related stress and etc., it could not be derived the results of the four seasons. Therefore, in order to generalize the results, the feed intakes were calibrated using a NRC (National Research and nutritional requirements of pigs from the Commission) standards. The finalized unit load generation and generation amounts of manure and urine were estimated at BOD 104.1 g/head/d, T-N 21.2 g/head/d, T-P 4.9 g/head/d, manure 0.96 L/d, urine 1.66 L/d with consideration of revised feed intake. Compare to the former research results of MOE (Ministry of Environment, 1999) and NIAS (National Institute of Animal Science, 2008), the generation amounts of manure and urine were similar to the NIAS`s values. In case of unit load generation, BOD and T-N were almost similar in all of them. However, the T-P unit load generation of MOE was more difference, e.g., 2.5 times high, compare to this study.

Introduction of the Basin Sewerage Plan in Japan through Case Studies of the Lake Biwa Sewerage System

We investigate the Japan’s Master Plan of Comprehensive Sewerage System (JMPS) and Lake Biwa basin sewerage and suggest future development direction of the Watershed Sewerage System Maintenance Plan in Korea enforced on February 2, 2013. The JMPS is designed for compliance with the environmental standard for water quality under the Environmental Policy Act. The effluent standards applied in the master plan of Lake Biwa’s Sewerage Plan for the Lake Biwa is tougher than the national standards. Therefore the Lake Biwa Baisn Sewerage System was the first in Japan to adopt facilities that perform advanced treatment for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. BOD, SS, T-N and T-P concentrations of discharge water of sewage are 0.9, 0.6, 5.5, 0.06 mg/L, respectively. Especially removal efficiency for BOD is 99.5 percent. It is necessary to study the diversification of the evaluation criteria, cost minimization approach, subsidy system improvement, economic concept of discharge load adjustment system and establishment of basin sewerage concept for the development of the basin sewerage plan in Korea.

Enhancement of HRSM4BMP Model to Simulate Sediment Reduction Efficiency Based on Watershed Scale

The objectives of study are 1) to enhance the filed scale BMPs model of HRSM4BMP for simulation of watershed scale and 2) to evaluate the enhanced HRSM4BMP model. Thus pre-process and post-process module were developed and HRSM4BMP was linked to SWAT routing module. After enhancement of model, enhanced HRSM4BMP model was applied to Heaan watershed in Kangwon province with Vegetative filter strip (2 m) in subwatershed #14 and reduction of sediment load was evaluated by watershed scale in outlet. The results of simulation, sediment load was reduced by 4 percent during 3 years in outlet. The result of this study is expected to be used Long-term BMPs establishing plan in South Korea

Evaluation of the Development and Reduction Scheme under Implementation Plan of Total Maximum Daily Loads in the Jinwi Watershed

The development and reduction scheme under implementation plan of TMDLs were performed in the Jinwi watershed including 8 cities (Gunpo, Yongin, Suwon, Anseong, Osan, Uiwang, Pyeongtaek and Hwaseong) since 2012. Progress of the annual development schemes was faster than the reduction schemes in most of the cities during the planning period. Main load reduction methods included establishment and enlargement of sewage treatment plants, resources of livestock excretions, and introduction of best management practices of non-point source pollution. Especially, reduction load using recycling and composting of livestock excretions comprised 34.1% of all reduction load. It is necessary to implement methodical development and reduction scheme for making of successful performance of TMDLs and water quality improvement in the Jinwi watershed.

A study on the runoff characteristics of livestock resources using artificial and natural rainfall

This study conducted a laboratory simulation using artificial and natural rainfall in order to investigate the runoff characteristics of livestock resources through the analysis of the surface runoff water and infiltration water by rainfall intensity and fertilization level. Cattle manure and pig liquid fertilizer was used as livestock resource. As a result of this study, it was observed that the surface runoff occurred over 32 mm/hr rainfall intensity, and flow rate of the surface runoff water and the runoff ratio of contaminant parameters from livestock resource was increased, as rainfall intensity was stronger. With doubled fertilization level, T-N increased in compost and the amount of runoff also considerably increased in liquefied fertilizer. In the case of natural rainfall, the runoff ratio of T-P clearly increased in compost and the T-N of final surface runoff ratio in compost and liquefied fertilizer was ranged from 0.13047 to 0.13623 with stronger rainfall intensity.
