Bahtiyar Dursun; Cihan Gokcol; İlhan Umut; Erdem Uçar; Süreyya Kocabey

This article investigates the possibility of providing electricity from solar/wind hybrid systems for a remote location with no electricity connection in the city of Edirne in the westernmost province of Turkey in order to decrease the high cost of utilizing only stand-alone diesel system and to achieve considerable fuel savings. In this study, National Renewable Energy Laboratorys (NREL) HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables) software is used to perform the techno-economic feasibility of such hybrid systems considering both solar data and wind data. Additionally, the contribution of solar and wind on energy production, cost of energy, and total operating hours of diesel generator is examined for the optimal hybrid configurations. Furthermore, fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions of different hybrid systems are investigated. Finally, suitability of utilizing hybrid solar–wind energy system over stand-alone diesel system is discussed mainly based on different solar global irradiances, wind speed, and diesel price.

A fixed speed induction generator model for unbalanced power flow analysis

Murat E. Balci; M. H. Hocaoglu; Ahmet Köksoy; Onur Ozturk; Bahtiyar Dursun

This paper proposes a model of the induction generator for the phase-domain power flow analysis of fixed speed wind turbine generating systems connected to balanced or unbalanced three-phase distribution systems. The proposed model is established by using a modified bi-quadratic equation, which is generally used for the calculation of node voltages in the power flow analysis of distribution systems. The main advantage of the proposed model is that it does not require slip information. Thus, it has computational efficiency when compared with the slip calculation based phase-domain induction generator model. In addition, for several unbalanced voltage cases, the numerical results of the proposed model, slip calculation based phase-domain model and time-domain d-q model are comparatively evaluated to show the validity of the proposed one.

The role of geothermal energy in sustainable development of Turkey

Bahtiyar Dursun; Cihan Gokcol

Energy can strongly act a key role in socio-economical development of Turkey. Turkeys energy needs are always increasing because Turkey has a rapidly growing economy and population. Although Turkey has numerous renewable energy sources, Turkey meets 12.8% of total demand from its own indigenous sources and unfortunately 87.2% of that from oil and gas supplying countries. This disastrous reality makes Turkey a big energy importing country. Otherwise, Turkey, in fact, can provide all energy demand from its abundant domestic sources itself. Although Turkey has the seventh big geothermal energy potential of the world, it exploits only 1.2% of all energy demand from geothermal energy. In this study, the role of geothermal energy in sustainable development of Turkey is particularly emphasized. To do this, potential and utilization of geothermal energy in Turkey are firstly presented in detail, and then importance and future developments of geothermal energy in Turkey are underlined.
