Abstract Adsorption of Fe(C104)3(H20)g onto chromatographic grade silica gel in the presence of ethyl acetate (to be used for trans-esterification) produces a supported reagent, Fe(C10,4)3(EtOAc)6/Si02-This reagent, has been found effective for the rapid and high yield of esters via trans-esterification on grinding in the presence of alcohols/carboxylic acids using pestle and mortar in the solid state.

Abstract Carboxylic acids in absolute alcohols, on treatment with thionyl chloride at room temperature give good yields of corresponding esters. Photochemistry1 of maleianilic acid and its derivatives has been of interest to us. It was thought that the yield of the photocyclised product is less because of probable decarboxylation which may be resulting during photolysis, and hence the need for esterification. Numerous new methods of esterification have been developed and reviewed by Haslam2, but we like to claim our method as the simplest and the easiest method to date. Another report by Huber and Brenner4,5 has used absolute methanol, thionyl chloride and HCl for preparing methyl esters of two amino acids (Methionine and Leucine) using a methodology which includes an unnecessary use of HCl.

N-Chloroacetylamines on photolysis in methanol, rearrange to give N-substituted glycine esters and methyl esters. Conditions have been established for the formation of a five-membered lactam system by cyclization. A dual mechanism is shown to be operative in the photolysis of the chloroacetamide function in polar and non-polar solvents, giving solvolytic and hydrogen-abstracted products respectively.
