Improving patient matching: Single patient view for Clinical Decision Support using Big Data analytics

Reena Duggal; Sunil Kumar Khatri; Balvinder Shukla

In this era of open information and data explosion, Healthcare industry is on a tipping point. Big Data plays a major role in this new change. One of the biggest challenges that the healthcare industry faces while it steps up digitization is the sheer size of the data, speed of generation of this data and complexity arising out of multiple & non-standard formats. Patient data residing in disparate systems is a roadblock to having the right information at the right time. Clinical Decision Support systems need a single view of the patient for making better diagnosis and treatments. Patient identification and matching is a critical challenge in interfacing to the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Different documents and results from various disparate systems like laboratory, pharmacy, claims systems etc. need to be linked to the correct patient record. At this point when healthcare organizations share patient information internally as well as externally, patient records from numerous disparate databases should be connected effectively to guarantee that the decisions made by the clinicians are based on correct patient records and minimizing duplicate information and overheads. This arises the need of improving patient matching for better decision support using single patient view. This paper attempts to study the problem of matching patient records from disparate systems and proposes a solution by using Big Data Analytic techniques like Fuzzy Matching algorithms & MapReduce for better clinical decision support. The main benefits of the proposed system are scalability, cost-effectiveness, flexibility of using any fuzzy algorithm and handling of any data source.

Process Mining in Intrusion Detection-The Need of Current Digital World

Ved Prakash Mishra; Balvinder Shukla

In the current age of digital world, all users of Internet/Network as well as organizations are suffering from intrusions which results into data/information are theft/loss. In the present manuscript concept of intrusion detection system (IDS) were discussed along with its types and basic approaches. It is found that signature analysis, expert system, data mining etc. still using for IDS. Survey was given related to cybercrime incidents across various industry sectors. After analyzing the attacks on networks of organizations in different industry sectors it is found that still attacks like DDoS are not preventable. Comparison of data mining algorithms used for intrusion detection was also done. Various methods to implement the algorithm along with the advantages and disadvantages were also discussed in detail. Because of the disadvantages like over fitting, slow testing speed, unstable algorithms etc., intruders in the network are still active. To avert these shortcomings there is a need to develop real-time intrusion detection and prevention system through which data/information can be protected and saved in real-time basis before a severe loss is experienced. The real-time prevention is possible only if alerts are received instantly without delays. For this purpose, process mining could be used. This technique gives instant time alerts with real time analysis so as to prevent intrusions and data loss.

Conflicts in a Closely Held Family Business: Durga and Company:

Manoj Joshi; Shailja Dixit; Amit Kumar Sinha; Balvinder Shukla

The purpose of this case is to investigate the nature of conflicts that arise in a closely held family business (CHFB) and to identify variables that ensure successful transition from one generation to the next. This case necessitates that in order to decide on the inheritance, a three-step process, prevention, management and resolution of conflict, is essential. It also highlights the gender bias in succession planning, ignoring the capabilities and competence of women in the family. Unstructured interviews around multiple stakeholders in the family business (FB) were taken identifying the core issues leading to conflicts. Triangulating with multiple sources or incumbents has reduced biases. It is observed that conflicts are inevitable within CHFBs. However, it is widely accepted that conflicts are paramount to forward progression both for the family and for the business, when it is constructive in nature. The case reflects the importance of understanding the critical issues around family and business. The outcome is useful in relaying better understanding on dimensions of conflicts that plague family-controlled business. Family businesses must relay importance of managing conflicts and bringing in earlier resolutions before they become extinct. The aftermath of not resolving such conflicts can be as catastrophic of destroying the FB and its wealth in the longer run.

Analysis of alarms to prevent the organizations network in real-time using process mining approach

Ved Prakash Mishra; Balvinder Shukla; Abhay Bansal

The analysis of alarms in the current intrusion detection system depends upon the manual system by network administrators. Due to the manual analysis, still many organizations are facing the false alarm problem causing the performance deficiency. In this manuscript, a model has been proposed for profile-based system, which will work on real time to analyze the suspicious activities and detect the intrusion automatically. The proposed model will also analyze the alarms to detect attacks and give the automatic response to prevent in real time. Processes were compared with original log events with tempered log events and the difference was found. Our extended work will be to develop the plugin in java with the combination of proposed algorithm, which could be imbedded in the tool to get the automatic response.

A Perspective of Innovation in Entrepreneurial Firms

Manoj Joshi; Balvinder Shukla

Rogers (1983) defines innovation as an idea, practice, or object that is perceived as new by individuals or units that adopt it. Innovation can be seen as “something that is new or improved and that which creates value”. For an entrepreneurial firm defined by Miller (1983) as, “the one that engages in product, market innovation, undertakes risky ventures, and is first to come up with proactive innovations, beating competitors to the punch”, innovation is considered integral for its existence. These entrepreneurial firms can be small and medium enterprises (SME’s) also. This study attempts to understand the perspective of innovation, characteristics of the entrepreneurial firms and their innovative practices.

Is Accelerator an Option? Impact of Accelerator in Start-up Eco-System!

Apoorv Ranjan Sharma; Manoj Joshi; Balvinder Shukla

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to study the impact of ‘Accelerators’ on Indian Start-ups eco system. Can it reduce start-ups mortality? Is ‘Accelerator’ instrumental in providing an effective platform for accelerating the growth of start-ups? Do the Accelerators meet the expectations of the start-ups? Can accelerated start ups attract Venture Capitalists funding? Design/methodology/approach This research attempts to establish the framework of analysis of the impact of Accelerator on start-ups, VC’s. For this purpose of this study, primary and secondary research data has been used. Existing literature in the form of secondary data is not much available because the concept of the Accelerators for survival and growth of start-ups is in nascent in India. Therefore the primary data through structured interviews as a research construct was chosen. Hence the structured interviews were conducted with founders of Start-ups’ and Accelerators’. Out of the existing forty (40) Accelerators in India that we approached, ten (10) responded to the structured interviews. FindingsStart-ups are finding accelerators an ideal platform for strategic guidance, accelerating their growth and fund raising process. The private equity (PE)/Venture capital (VC) are getting higher quality start-ups coming out of accelerators. Overall the mortality of the start-ups is reduced.Research limitations/implications (if applicable)The research is based on the primary data captured from start-ups and accelerators and secondary data published in start-ups media. The concept is in nascent stage in Indian context and is gradually maturing. Practical implicationsAccelerators can visibly impact the fund raising aspects, value proposition and revenue growth. The research is first of its kind in Indian perspective based on the interaction with the founders’ of Start-ups’ and Accelerators’.

International Lessons on Innovation for Socio Economic Development in India

Manoj Joshi; Apoorva Srivastava; Balvinder Shukla

More appropriate form of innovation may be roughly defined as technology will be more suited to low-income consumers. This means that more appropriate technology will be more suited low income consumers. This means more labour intensive, less skilled, smaller scale, use more local materials, produce simpler low-income products than most of advanced nations technology currently being transferred to low-income nations. Innovators internationally, create most of the wealth, new or a proportionate jump from the existing, while the managers and others tend to safeguard it. Much of the growth comes from entrepreneurs and this leads to creation of employment. They bestow new value to old assets. Create entirely new fountains of wealth. More appropriate innovation may be socially not very useful. Learning effects would be such as to outweigh the loss in output. Thus it is necessary to research why some companies are able to create more value than others! How do some sectors create more wealth than others? Why certain nations do better than others and what is the underlying cause for such successes in creation of wealth? Is innovation and important factor towards socio-economic development of a Nation?
