Low grade bioethanol for fuel mixing on gasoline engine using distillation process

Setia Abikusna; Bambang Sugiarto; Dedi Suntoro; Azami

Utilization of renewable energy in Indonesia is still low, compared to 34% oil, 20% coal and 20% gas, utilization of energy sources for water 3%, geothermal 1%, 2% biofuels, and biomass 20%. Whereas renewable energy sources dwindling due to the increasing consumption of gasoline as a fuel. It makes us have to look for alternative renewable energy, one of which is bio ethanol. Several studies on the use of ethanol was done to the researchers. Our studies using low grade bio ethanol which begins with the disitillation independently utilize flue gas heat at compact distillator, produces high grade bio ethanol and ready to be mixed with gasoline. Stages of our study is the compact distillator design of the motor dynamic continued with good performance and emission testing and ethanol distilled. Some improvement is made is through the flue gas heat control mechanism in compact distillator using gate valve, at low, medium, and high speed engine. Compact distillator used is kind of a batch distillation column. C...

Dynamic Emissions Reduction from Vehicles with Technical and Behavioral Approach

Mohammad Syafrizal; Estelle Bretagne; Nadia Hamani; Bambang Sugiarto; Setyo Sarwanto Moersidik

This paper describes a dynamic model of emissions reduction in the land transport sector. The urban transportation system is a complex system with multiple variables, feedback loops, and is influenced by social, economic, and environmental factors. The proposed model consists of two submodels: “Vehicle Fleet” and “Emission Calculation.” The model runs in Powersim Studio software using data from the Traffic Management Centre of The National Police Headquarters in Indonesia. The case study of Semanggi intersection in Jakarta is used to illustrate this research work.

Prediction and Validation of Heat Release Direct Injection Diesel Engine Using Multi-Zone Model

Bagus Anang Nugroho; Bambang Sugiarto; Prawoto; Lukman Shalahuddin

The objective of this study is to develop simulation model which capable to predict heat release of diesel combustion accurately in efficient computation time. A multi-zone packet model has been applied to solve the combustion phenomena inside diesel cylinder. The model formulations are presented first and then the numerical results are validated on a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine at various engine speed and timing injections. The model were found to be promising to fulfill the objective above.

Multidimensional CFD Simulation of a Diesel Engine Combustion: A Comparison of Combustion Models

Arif Budiyanto; Bambang Sugiarto; Bagus Anang

The objective of this study is to simulate combustiuon process and pollutant formation in the combustion chamber of a DI diesel engine. The modelled results were validated by comparing predictions against corresponding experimental data for a diesel engine. The predicted and measured in-cylinder pressure and emission data were in good agreement. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is able to significantly reduce the number of experimental test and measurement and lower the development time and costs. Some parameter which are needed for CFD calculation must be achieved experimentally such as turbulence time scale constant. The CFD simulations demonstrated good agreement to the measured data. The results show that, applying appropriate constant of each combustion model including eddy break up model (Ebu), caracteristic timescale model (Ctm) and extended coherent flamelet model (Ecfm) causes the computaional result to be in agreement with experimental results. Furthermore the result show that the nearest prediction in comparasion with experimental result is by applying the Ecfm model.
