Aspects of Grief: Bereavement in Adult Life and Helping the Bereaved: Therapeutic Interventions for Children, Adolescents, and Adults.

Barbara A. Winstead

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1992, Vol 37(12), 1341-1342. Reviews the books, Aspects of Grief: Bereavement in Adult Life by Jane Littlewood (see record 1992-97464-000) and Helping the Bereaved: Therapeutic Interventions for Children, Adolescents, and Adults by Alicia Skinner Cook and Daniel S. Dworkin (see record 1992-97579-000). The first book provides a useful introduction to understanding the experience of grief and helping those experiencing grief. Discrepencies are pointed out, but little effort is made to evaluate models, to research critically, or to make sense of contradictions. The reader is left with the feeling of having been told something about what lots of theorists and researchers have written about grief, but not having been given a clear picture of the meanings of the grief. The second book was written to help mental health professionals gain the necessary knowledge and skills to work effectively both individually and in groups. It contains far less research and theory than the first one, but it presents many useful guidelines and recommendations for clinicians. A strength of the book is its developmental perspective and the inclusion of clinical assessment and therapy for children, adolescents, and adults in one volume.
