Selective catalytic reduction of NOx using zeolitic catalysts for high temperature applications

John W. Byrne; James M. Chen; Barry K. Speronello

A new zeolite based catalyst which can reduce NOx emissions from sources operating at temperatures outside the range of conventional catalytic processes has been developed. This zeolitic SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst extends the maximum operating temperature for the reduction of NOx using NH3 from ca. 425°C for standard V2O5/TiO2 (V/Ti) catalysts up to ca. 600°C. This paper discusses the performance of this new SCR catalyst relative to other commercial SCR catalysts, i.e., those based on platinum and V/Ti. Laboratory, pilot plant and commercial results are presented.

Complete purification of flue gas from thermoelectric power stations fed by coal and/or fuel oil

Noè Rinaldi; Barry K. Speronello

This article illustrates a new process for the complete purification of flue gas from the thermoelectric power stations fed by coal and/or fuel oil. This process removes both flyash and acid gases (SOx′, Cl2, HF) by scrubbing with diluted basic solutions in three stages per the Tecnochim process which has been successfully used since 1989 by ALCAN to purify the exhaust gases from aluminium remelting ovens. NOx is then removed by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with NH3 using a high density composite V2O5TiO2 catalyst produced by Engelhard which has been used for many years on flue gas from turbines and thermoelectric power stations after wet deSOx plants.
