In this paper the targeted energy transfer (TET) phenomenon between a linear multi- DOF master structure and several slave parallel nonlinear energy sink (NES) devices during a 1:1 resonance capture is investigated. An analytical method is proposed for tuning optimal NES parameters, which leads to efficient TETs. Then, the procedure is intentionally narrowed for a 4DOF master structure with two parallel NESs at the last DOF in order to grasp optimum NES parameters of a prototype structure that is built and tested at the Civil Engineering and Building Department Laboratory of the ENTPE. The aim is to control the first mode of the compound nonlinear prototype system by demonstrating the efficiency of designed parallel NESs by the suggested method.

We study a problem of passive nonlinear targeted energy transfer between a two degree of freedom suspension bridge model and a single degree of freedom nonlinear energy sink (NES). The system is studied under 1:1:1 nonlinear resonance involved in targeted energy transfer mechanisms. Analytical expansions are performed by mean of complexification methods, multiple scales expansions and exploits also the concept of limiting phase trajectories (LPTs). Several control mechanisms for aeroelastic instability are identified, and analytical calculations bring to efficient parameters for the absorber design. Numerical simulations are performed and good agreement with analytical predictions is observed. It results that the concept of Limiting Phase Trajectories (LPT) allows formulating adequately the problem of intensive energy transfer from a bridge to a nonlinear energy sink.

Mainly nonlinear additional light attachments, named Nonlinear Energy Sink (NES), are widely studied for vibration mitigation of structures [1, 2]. Theoretical, numerical studies and finally preparation of design tools for a NES with cubic nonlinearity dedicated to mitigation of horizontal vibrations of a bridge cable have been studied already by the authors, and its efficiency demonstrated experimentally [3]. Nevertheless this cubic nonlinear absorber was unable to control vertical vibration of the cable because of gravity effects. The present study aims at controlling the vertical vibration of the same bridge cable under gravity effects using a different type of nonlinearity for the NES.
