ABSTRACT In this paper, we investigated Disperse Red (DR1, DR13) and Disperse Orange (DO3, DO13) dyes embedded into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymeric matrix. The linear optical properties such as absorption coefficient, refractive index and energy band-gap of guest-host polymeric thin films were studied using spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry combined with transmittance measurements.  We found that the refractive index of DR1 is higher than the refractive indices for other studied azo dyes compounds. We also observed that the energy band-gap of studied materials varies from about 2 eV to 2.3 eV.

Enhancement of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of Alq 3 in polar aprotic solvents

Beata Derkowska-Zielinska

The influence of solvent polarity on nonlinear optical properties of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (Alq3) was investigated by the degenerate four-wave mixing method at the 532 nm. It was obtained that the effective values of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χeff⟨3⟩) and the second-order hyperpolarizability (γeff) of Alq3 depend on the solvent polarity. Additionally, it was found that Alq3 dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide has the highest values of χeff⟨3⟩ and γeff. Furthermore, two Stegemans figures of merit were also calculated. The obtained results suggest that Alq3 is also promising material for application in all-optical signal processing devices.

The effect of solvent polarity on second order hyperpolarizability of selected phthalocyanines complexes

Beata Derkowska-Zielinska

ABSTRACT The effect of the solvent polarity on nonlinear optical properties of selected phthalocyanines complexes of copper, cobalt, zinc and magnesium using degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) method is presented. Ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide were used as solvents for all studied complexes. The solvent effect is observed for the absorption spectra of metal phthalocyanines (MPcs) solutions. It was noticed that the solvent polarity as well as the central metal ion play a crucial role in determining the values of the second order hyperpolarizability (γeff) of studied macrocyclic compounds. In general, γeff values of MPcs solutions are changing with change of the solvent polarity in order of ZnPc > MgPc > CuPc > CoPc. And these values are higher for samples dissolved in polar aprotic solvent than in polar protic solvent.

Influence of various solvents on the nonlinear optical properties of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs)

Beata Derkowska-Zielinska

The aim of this work was to learn how the influence of various solvents correlates with nonlinear optical properties of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs). The method, which was used to measure nonlinear optical properties, was degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM). We used ethanol, chloroform and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent of metallophthalocyanines. The absorption spectra of MPcs solutions present a narrow Q-band in the visible region and a relatively wide B-band in the near ultraviolet. In all cases we observed the solvatochromism effect. Nonlinear optical properties of MPcs solutions change with using different polarity of solvent in the following way: n2 (ZnPc) < n2 (CoPc) < n2 (CuPc).

Beata Derkowska-Zielinska; V. Figà; Oksana Krupka; V. Smokal

In this paper we report the synthesis of side chain methacrylic polymers functionalized with styrylquinoline fragments. The polymerization was carried out in dimethylformamide with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The products of polymerization were characterized by 1H NMR, DSC. A study on the energetics of modelling compounds has been performed by a synergetic use of both electrochemical and optical techniques. The results of photochemical activities of the corresponding polymers are presented.

ABSTRACT A series of novel polymers with styrylquinoline moiety and different substituents units have been successfully synthesized by radical polymerization. Styrylquinoline polymers were obtained by a three-step synthetic approach. This includes the condensation, preparation of a methacrylic monomers and their polymerization. The synthesized polymers are soluble in common organic solvents. Their photophysical and photochemical properties of the initial styrylquinoline and the polymer have been investigated by UV–vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Polymers were characterized by 1HNMR-spectroscopy and DSC techniques.

Oksana Krupka; V. Smokal; Beata Derkowska-Zielinska; Alexey Kolendo

In this study, the 2-(4-methacryloxystyryl)quinoline, 2-(4-methacryloxystyryl)-6-methoxyquinoline were synthesized. The polymers built from the free radical polymerization of methacrylic monomers incorporating the diarylethylenes sidegroup have been synthesized in dimethylformamide with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The products of polymerization were characterized and evaluated by 1HNMR, UV spectroscopy. Thermal stability was characterized by DSC method. Their optical and photochemical properties as well as temperature dependence of the photoluminescence of diarylethylenes have been investigated.

Nonlinear optical properties of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum

Beata Derkowska-Zielinska

Nonlinear optical properties of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (Alq3) solution were investigated by standard backward degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) method at 532 nm. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used to dissolve Alq3 powder, which was purchased from Sigma Aldrich Co. It was found that the studied material exhibit large value of third order nonlinear optical susceptibility.

In this paper, we present the optical properties such as absorption, luminescence and IR transmission spectra of 2-styrylquinoline containing polymers thin films. We notice that the extension of the polymer chain in these compounds causes the change their spectroscopic and physical properties.

Optical and thermal studies of Z n1−x Mg x Se crystals

Beata Derkowska-Zielinska; A. Marasek

The optical (such as absorption coefficient, linear refractive index, real and imaginary parts of dielectric constants and energy band gap) and thermal (such as diffusivities, effectivities and conductivities) properties of ZnSe and Zn0.87Mg0.13Se crystals grown by the modified high-pressure Bridgman method were studied using spectroscopic ellipsometry combined with transmittance measurements and photopyroelectric technique. From the measurements performed, one can conclude that the incorporation of Mg as constituent into ZnSe crystals plays a crucial role in the observation of the optical and thermal response.
