INTRODUCTION Clinical characteristics of rheumatoid arthritis (AR) justify its multidisciplinary approach, within which nutritional intervention is included. Certain nutritional components influence the cellular metabolism and interfere in the pathological inflammatory process, so that they may act as coadjutant in the treatment of many inflammatory diseases, among which AR is in - cluded. AIM To analyze the evidence related to the therapeutical effects of the polyunsaturated fatty acids, mediterranean diet, olive oil and certain antioxidant nutrients, on chronic inflammation and AR symptomatology. METHODS Non-Systematic revision in Cochrane, Pubmed, Scopus, Sportdiscus and Amed, from 2003 to March 2013, and subsequent applications of inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS Evidence on polyunsaturated fatty acids suggests that they produce clinical improvement and inhibitory effects over the AR inflammatory response. As regards the mediterranean diet, evidence points out that it decreases both pain and disease activity. In the case of the olive oil, although there are not enough studies, some effects are observed such as inflammatory markers reduction and oxidative stress inhibition. Finally, limited and contradictory evidence is found regarding the effectiveness of antioxidants. CONCLUSION There exist studies which suggest that some dietetic elements (polyunsaturated fatty acids, mediterranean diet and antioxidants) have anti-inflammatory effects and decrease AR disease activity. More studies are required to empower the results on those aspects where evidence is still non conclusive.

OBJECTIVE To determine health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measured with the 36-item Short-Form (SF-36) questionnaire in women workers in the fishing industry, compared with norm-based values in the reference population and other similar samples of persons with musculoskeletal disorders. METHOD A cross-sectional study was performed to measure HRQoL in 917 shellfish gatherers. Women taking part in a physiotherapy workshop were invited to participate. We used a self-administered questionnaire, including questions on sociodemographic variables, lifestyle, comorbidity, the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, and HRQoL. For the SF-36 raw scores, norm-based scores and z-scores were calculated. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 50.6 years (standard deviation: 8.8). In all dimensions of the SF-36, values in the sample were lower than in the general reference population. The greatest differences were in younger people. The most affected dimensions were bodily pain, vitality and general health. Physical health was more affected than mental health. CONCLUSIONS HRQoL, especially physical components, was worse in women shellfish gatherers than in the general population and other population samples.

OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency and factors associated with medicine consumption and consultations with family physicians due to musculoskeletal pain in fishery workers. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study (n = 929). The variables analyzed consisted of sociodemographic factors, the frequency of musculoskeletal pain, healthcare resource consumption, back pain disability (Roland-Morris) and health-related quality of life (SF-36). RESULTS A total of 98.7% of the sample were women, with a mean age of 50.6 years. Musculoskeletal pain was reported by 66.5%, 43% were taking medication, and 64% had consulted their family physician due to musculoskeletal pain. The factors associated with medication intake in the logistic regression analysis were the number of years worked in the sector, hip-knee pain, bodily pain and physical functioning. The variables associated with physician visits were the presence of hip-knee pain, neck-back-shoulder pain, bodily pain, and social functioning. CONCLUSIONS The variables most closely associated with resource utilization were hip-knee pain and the physical dimension of health-related quality of life, especially bodily pain.
