A practical algorithm for automated mesh design in finite element analysis is developed. A regional mixed mesh improvement procedure is introduced. The error control, algorithm implementation, code development, and the solution accuracy are discussed. Numerical example includes automated mesh designs for plane elastic media with singularities. The efficiency of the procedure is demonstrated. In this paper, existing innovation models are reviewed. The influence of technology and market-driven schools of thought on the creation and diffusion of innovation is examined. Incremental vs. radical models and autonomous vs. systemic models are considered in the context of the construction industry. The concept of “technology adoption life cycle” is investigated to understand better the acceptance of new technology by key parties. A new model of innovation is proposed. In this model, the transformation process of invention into adoption flows through a cyclical mechanism encompassing six phases: 1) need, 2) creation, 3) invention, 4) innovation, 5) diffusion, and 6) adoption. This model clearly shows the interaction of the three most influential domains: users, changes, and the environment. The model also takes into consideration the influence of technology and market-driven forces on the creation and diffusion of innovation. As a consequence of their particular function in the construction activity, construction management firms should perform as catalysts in the generation and diffusion of technological advances in the construction industry.

The recent seismic code SNI 1726-2012 is significantly different compared to the older code SNI 1726-2002. The seismic hazard map was significantly changed and the level of maximum considered earthquake was significantly increased. Therefore, buildings designed according to outdated code may not resist the higher demand required by newer code. In this study, seismic performance of Hotel X in Kupang, Indonesia which was designed based on SNI-1726-2002 is investigated. The structure was analyzed using Nonlinear Time History Analysis. The seismic load used was a spectrum consistent ground acceleration generated from El-Centro 18 May 1940 North-South component in accordance to SNI 1726-2012. The results show that Hotel X can resist maximum considered earthquake required by SNI 1726-2012. The maximum drift ratio is 0.81% which is lower than the limit set by FEMA 356-2000 (2%). Plastic hinge damage level is also lower than the allowance in ACMC 2001.

The essence of building design process and management for building sustainability in the creation and maintenance of a qualitative architectural product is investigated in this paper. The design process, concept of building sustainability and particularly the quality of the built environment are discussed. Akure, a state capital in Nigeria was used as a case study. The principles and indicators for sustainability of buildings and its implications on the quality of the environment are examined in details. Survey findings include the views of the professionals on the clients, perception on the design process as well as management of projects, and the implications on the quality of the ensuring products and the city’s environment. The data were factor analyzed using varimax rotation criterion (with Kaiser Normalization). The results revealed that five factors were effective, with one of them exhibiting the greatest variability and individual differences. The variables that loaded on this factor were really the aspects of the process and management relating to the clients. The findings also revealed the professionals’ wrong attitude towards design process as shown with a very high degree of variability in the study. The paper concludes by recommending the enactment and enforcement of relevant policies with adequate education of the people and the involvement of all the stakeholders in the management of building projects and environmental programmes for the realization of a qualitative architectural product.

The paper provides an overview of different methods that can be used for concrete maturity determination, outlining Romanian Concrete Code Specification (NE 012-99) in relation to using an effective and rational method in evaluating in-situ concrete strength at different ages. This paper presents a research project, which investigates the use of virtual reality and computer communication technology to facilitate building design coordination in distributed environments. The emphasis of the system, called VR-based DEsign COordination (VRDECO) is providing a communication tool that can be used by remote designers for settling ideas before they fully engage in concurrent engineering environments. VRDECO provides the necessary design tools, library of building elements and communication procedures, for designers from remote places to perform and coordinate their initial tasks. It has been implemented using available commercial software packages, and is used in designing a simple house. VRDECO facilitates the creation a preliminary design and simple communication with the client. There are, however, some difficulties in the development of the full version of VRDECO, i.e.: creating an adequate number of building elements, building specification database with a sufficient number of choices, and establishing a systematic rule to determine the parts of a building that are updateable.

Limitation of parking spaces in Petra Christian University need to be solved by deterring private cars usage. However, the factors that affect students to choose their mode to campus are unknown. Determination of factors that influence mode choices may support alternatives and policy that could be proposed. Analytic Hierarchy Process was used to analyze the factors. Trips characteristics data of the students was collected by questionnaires interview. The results of the analysis show that the main factors that influence student to choose their mode to campus is security (49,3%) and time (27,3%). Walking from student dormitory was the best alternative (33.2%), while carpool (16%) is slightly lower than private cars usage (18%). Vanpool (12.4%) is lower than carpool.
