Two new polymeric complexes, [Zn(pydc)]n (1) and [Co(pydc)(H2O)2]n·nH2O (2) (pydc = pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate), have been synthesized and characterized. Complex 1 crystallizes in an acentric space group Pna21 and consists of a 3D network with unsymmetrical pydc linkers arranged in a parallel mode. Complex 2 crystallizes in the centric space group P−1, in which pydc ligands link Co(II) metal ions to generate a 2D layer structure with (4,4) topology nets. The Kurtz powder measurement shows that 1 exhibits a powder SHG efficiency about 5 times higher than that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and represents the first NLO-active 3D coordination network with parallel arrangement of dipolar ligands.

A new polymeric metal organosulfide [Cu(I)3(pymt)3]n(pymt = pyrimidine-2-thiolate) with strong red photoluminescence was synthesized through solvothermal redox reaction, and crystallographically characterized to be a one-dimensional chiral structure containing metal-metal interactions.

The reaction of 1,3-bis(pyridyl-4-ylthio)propan-2-one with Cu(ClO4)2 · 6H2O gave a new complex {[Cu2(4PDS)2(ox)(H2O)4](ClO4)2} n (4PDS = 4,4′-dipyridyldisulfide, ox = oxalate), with 4PDS and ox being created by the Cu(II)-assisted oxidation of 1,3-bis(pyridyl-4-ylthio)propan-2-one. The complex determined by X-ray crystallography is a 1D polymer, in which metallacycles formed by two 4PDS and two Cu(II) ions are further bridged through ox anions. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Fddd, with lattice parameters a = 15.106(2), b = 23.667(4), c = 27.637(3) Å and Z = 8.

The title compound, [Co(C6H4NO2)2(NO2)(H2O)], displays O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, leading to the formation of a two-dimensional network structure. Interestingly, the oxidation and decomposition of α-pyridoin and the auto-redox reaction of cobalt nitrate occurred during the reaction process.
