The Class Nature of Globalization in the Age of Imperialism

Berch Berberoglu

This article examines the relationship between globalization and imperialism, the dynamics, contradictions, and crisis of global capitalism, and its political-military arm the imperial state, the developing and maturing class struggle, and the prospects for social change and transformation of global capitalism. It examines these within the context of the globalization of capital in the 20th century and draws out the political implications of this process for the future course of capitalist development on a world scale. The article drives home the point that contemporary neoliberal globalization is in fact an advanced stage of capitalist imperialism, and that the contradictions of 21st century globalization are thus a projection of the contradictions of capitalism on a global scale, with all its inherent exploitative characteristics and conflicts that will lead to the revolutionary transformation of capitalist society.

Conclusion: Socialism in Our Time? The Prospects for Socialism in the Twenty-First Century

Berch Berberoglu

The history of social movements and revolutions surveyed in this Handbook provides ample evidence that an oppressed and exploited people who become conscious of their oppression and unite to overcome their predicament will persist in their struggle and prevail to set themselves free, as in the chant “iel pueblo unido jamas sera vencido!”—“the people united will never be defeated!”. This has become the slogan of millions of oppressed people throughout the world who have voiced these words in many languages, and the feeling has been the same—that for true human freedom to occur, people must come together and fight for their liberation. This process has evolved over the course of history through the formation and development of social movements and revolutions on a world scale.

Introduction: Dynamics of Social Movements, Revolution, and Social Transformation

Berch Berberoglu

Social movements have been struggling against repressive states advancing the interests of dominant classes for many centuries. Over time, millions of people have organized and become empowered to bring about social change and transformations in numerous societies across the globe. This opening introductory essay provides an analysis of the conditions that lead to the emergence and development of social movements struggling to bring about transformation of society. It examines the origins, nature, dynamics, and mobilization of social movements as they struggle to transform the prevailing dominant social, economic, and political order. After a brief historical background and an examination of objective and subjective conditions leading to the development of social movements, the essay explores the dynamics of movement organization and mobilization with reference to concrete cases of social movements that have succeeded in rising up and transforming societies across the globe in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

The Marxist Theory of Social Movements, Revolution, and Social Transformation

Berch Berberoglu

In contrast to mainstream classical and contemporary conventional theories of social movements discussed in previous chapters, this chapter presents an alternative, Marxist perspective that differs from its conventional counterparts in some very important ways. The central component of this divergence is an analysis of the class nature of social movements, the state, and politics, and the class character of revolutionary movements vying for state power, as well as the nature and role of the state that assumes power following a social revolution.

The Class Nature of Religion and Religious Movements: A Critical Analysis of the Iranian Revolution of 1979

Berch Berberoglu

Religion and religious movements have played a prominent role in society and social transformations throughout the course of human history. This has especially been the case in the closing decades of the twentieth century, when Islamic fundamentalism, prompted by the Iranian Revolution of 1979, spread throughout the Middle East and beyond, affecting political developments in the region that changed the balance of social forces in a profound way. My interest in studying the class nature of religion and religious movements goes back quarter of a century when I undertook the study of the role of the Islamic clergy and its relationship to the landowning class and the peasantry in Ottoman Turkey as part of my doctoral dissertation research which was later published as my first book Turkey ill Crisis in the early 1980s. The Iranian Revolution of 1979 attracted my attention for the very same reasons, a coalition of forces led by the landlords, merchants, and the clergy overthrew the Shahs regime and installed in its place theocratic rule of the imams and the mullahs. This group then consolidated their hold of state power in favor of the traditional elites during the first two years immediately following the revolution to advance the interests of their traditional allies the landlords and the merchants under the veil of Islam as a legitimizing ideology. This paper evolved from years of study and analysis of the intricate relationship between religion and class forces in Iran before and after the Revolution to make sense of the post-revolutionary policies of the Islamic state that has managed to remain in power for nearly quarter of a century.
