A Primer on Internet Economics

Bernard Michael Gilroy

One of the major economic developments in the world economy of the last decade has been the complementary globalization of production and the rapid development of information and communication technology as exhibited through the emergence of the Internet. The preliminary analysis presented here is guided by the belief that although the Internet has received a great deal of publicity, there still remains areas of vacuum with regard to research on the economics of the Internet and a more wide-spread understanding of the prime issues involved. After a brief history of the evolution of the Internet industry in section 2, a segmentation map of the Internet industry is presented in order to aid one in understanding potential Internet issues that will affect academics, political regulators, industry leaders, and the general public in the future. Equipped with this greater understanding of the way the Internet functions, economic issues and Internet concepts are selectively identified and discussed within the basic structure of interoperability, network externalities and the equitable statistical sharing of Internet resources.

Ist Fairer Handel Wirklich Fair

Bernard Michael Gilroy; Birke Thuy Duong Nguyen

Economic insights and deficits in European biotechnology patent policy

Bernard Michael Gilroy; Tobias Volpert

The decisive statutory provision of the EU for patent protection of genetic engineering inventions is the so-called directive on biotechnological patents (DBP). Its objective is the encouragement of research and development in the genetic engineering sector. The following exposition shows that the DBP has two major flaws from the economists point of view, under which particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, the driving force of this young line of business, suffer.

Gibt es eine optimale Frauenquote

Bernard Michael Gilroy; Anastasia Heimann; Mark Schopf

Bernard Michael Gilroy; Daniel Kruse

Export production under exchange rate uncertainty

Udo Broll; Bernard Michael Gilroy; Elmar Lukas

Given that a multinational enterprise can react flexibly upon exchange rate movements, international trade flows may be interpreted as an option. An enterprise will opt to export if the profits obtained from exporting under given exchange rate developments are greater than if foreign subsidiary sales were opted. Naturally, given negative exchange rate scenario situations, an enterprise will choose not to export. By virtue of a favorable exchange rate situation it may be more advantageous to implement the flexibility given by the inherent option exercise privilege. Interestingly, even taking account of entrepreneurial risk aversion aspects of enterprises, it is demonstrated that situations characterized by enhanced exchange rate volatility may still lead to greater export trade volumes.
