Aggregate Efficiency and Productivity Analysis in the Tourism Industry

Nicolas Peypoch; Bernardin Solonandrasana

This paper presents a new methodology for analysing efficiency and productivity in the tourism industry in an aggregate context. More precisely, by using the directional distance function, an aggregate Luenberger productivity indicator for a group of tourist firms is proposed. Moreover, the possibility of the reallocation of inputs and outputs between the individual tourist firms in the group is considered. Finally, this new performance measure is illustrated by considering a group of hotels.

Research Note: Technical Efficiency in the Tourism Industry

Nicolas Peypoch; Bernardin Solonandrasana

This note presents an efficiency measure for the tourism industry. It demonstrates the value of the proportional distance function, which simultaneously contracts inputs and expands outputs for analysing efficiency. It can be stated that if the tourism industry were to include this measure in the analysis of its technical efficiency, new possibilities would be opened up with regard to managerial recommendations.

Productivity growth and sources of technological change in travel agencies.

Laurent Botti; Walter Briec; Nicolas Peypoch; Bernardin Solonandrasana

This paper proposes a procedure for analysing tourism productivity. The procedure is based on the Luenberger productivity indicator for estimating and decomposing productivity change into efficiency change and technological change. The authors expand the procedure and further decompose the process of technological change to study the sources of bias within it. Therefore, a clearer and more enlightening view emerges of the productivity of travel agencies. The Portuguese travel agency sector is used as an application. Some managerial implications are developed.

A note on productivity change in French and Italian seaports

Jean Pascal Guironnet; Nicolas Peypoch; Bernardin Solonandrasana

This paper proposes a framework for benchmarking French and Italian seaports and the rationalisation of their operational activities. The analysis is based on the Luenberger productivity indicator. The main benefit of our method is to allow for both input contraction and output expansion, in determining relative efficiencies and productivity changes. Benchmarks are provided for improving the operations of those seaports, which perform worse than others. Several interesting and useful managerial insights and implications arise from the study. Following this approach, the benchmarking of multi-country seaports gives a different picture than the one which is obtained from a single country.

Which sustainable development perspectives for an ‘E-attraction’ destination? An overview of the economic impacts

Nicolas Peypoch; Elisabeth Robinot; Bernardin Solonandrasana

Abstract A tourism destination generates economic repercussions for the local economy, in particular when it represents an ‘E-attraction’ for tourists. The objective of this paper is to present the various impacts of a destination when it is considered as an ‘E-attraction’. Along this line, the connection is established between various elements of tourism economics and this type of attraction. More precisely, it appears that positive effects follow from mass tourism; however, sustainable tourism for these destinations requires a special attention with regard to carrying capacities.

Tourism return frequency demand in Madagascar

Rado Randriamboarison; F. Rasoamanajara; Bernardin Solonandrasana

This paper analyses the demand for tourism in Madagascar, Africa, using counting data models to identify the covariates that explain the return frequency of tourists. The analysis employs a questionnaire to ascertain the characteristics that influence the tourism return frequency. Several count models are estimated for comparative purposes. Robustness tests are implemented, and policy implications are drawn out to improve the understanding and management of frequent, heterogeneous tourist frequency demand.

Diagnostic touristique régional : le cas du Languedoc-Roussillon

Laurent Botti; Nicolas Peypoch; Bernardin Solonandrasana
