Community-Building with Web-Based Systems -- Investigating a Hybrid Community of Students

Markus Rohde; Leonard Reinecke; Bernd Pape; Monique Janneck

This paper examines WiInf-Central, the ‘virtual homeplace’ of a student community (on Information Systems) at the University of Hamburg, and focuses on processes of social identity and community-building. Drawing on social-identity theory and communities of practice as our theoretical basis, we illustrate that the processes of identity-building and positive in-group evaluation triggered by WiInf-Central serve as a means for students of Information Systems to assert themselves against faculty members and students of other disciplines. While our study reveals strong mechanisms of social exclusion, inclusion mechanisms have to be assessed in a more differentiated way. In particular, our study shows the emergence of several ‘subgroups’, which appear largely closed to other community members. We ascribe this to both the self-organized and the hybrid – half virtual, half real – nature of the community based on WiInf-Central.

Vernetzte Projektarbeit mit CommSy

Iver Jackewitz; Michael Janneck; Bernd Pape

Teaching Social Informatics as a Knowledge Project

Iver Jackewitz; Michael Janneck; Detlev Krause; Bernd Pape; Monique Strauss

Teaching Social Informatics poses the challenge of portraying future scenarios of technology development and use as well as criticising them. We envision meeting this challenge by offering students an authentic, interdisciplinary, educational framework, providing real-life, hands-on experiences. In this paper, we will first develop the idea of “knowledge projects” as a means to encourage such educational settings. Then we will focus on our efforts to develop a Web-based software system, named CommSy, designed to support communication and co-ordination in learning communities involved in knowledge projects.

Bernd Pape; Monique Strauss; Kai Raudzus; Anica Richardt

Matching needs - application service providing for asynchronous learning networks

Wolf-Gideon Bleek; Iver Jackewitz; Bernd Pape

Universities have severe difficulties in using e-learning applications successfully due to organizational problems to provide them. Providing a Web-based learning environment is an enormous effort not only from the didactical and organizational perspective, but also from an administrative and technical point of view. In this paper we critically review the steps taken for making a Web-based learning platform available to a broad public by developing a model for application service providing. ASP in the university context is a different business than ASP between companies. A much more flexible relation between service provider and consumer needs to be established. We outline the necessary roles involved and tasks observed. As a result the paper proposes a process that focuses on organizational, technical and financial conditions, which must be investigated when undertaking a similar enterprise.

Iver Jackewitz; Bernd Pape
