Cephalhematoma and caput succedaneum: Do they always occur in labor?

Boris M. Petrikovsky; E. Schneider; Michelle Smith-Levitin; Beth Gross

OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to analyze our experience with cephalhematomas detected prenatally by ultrasonography. STUDY DESIGN Seven cases of cephalhematomas were identified prenatally among 16,292 fetuses having comprehensive ultrasonographic examinations between 1993 and 1996. The course of pregnancy and the neonatal outcome were reviewed in each case. RESULTS Cephalhematomas appeared as an echogenic bulge posterior to the occipital region (5 cases) or at the temporal region of the fetal head (2 cases). CONCLUSION Cephalhematomas, which are believed to be a result of operative delivery, can also originate, in utero, antepartum. Premature rupture of membranes appears to be an associated factor.

Background. The goal of the study was to measure the blood flow parameters of the fetal internal jugular vein during the second half of normal pregnancy using Doppler ultrasound.

Single-needle insertion technique for thoracocentesis for bilateral pleural effusions

Boris Petrikovsky; Beth Gross; Regina Spinazzola; Martin G. Bialer

A 28-week fetus with hydrops and bilateral pleural effusions underwent drainage of both pleural spaces via a single-needle supradiaphragmatic insertion technique. The traditional approach was not feasible due to a persistently unfavorable fetal position. The dependent pleural effusion was drained by a needle which coursed through the nondependent pleural effusion. The needle traversed the midline pleura through an avascular plane. Thereafter the needle was withdrawn into nondependent pleural effusion which was drained. Both lungs expanded with favorable neonatal outcome.
