Value of thyroid carcinoma imaging after therapeutic doses of radioiodine.

Suppiah Balachandran; Bettye A. Sayle

Thyroid carcinoma scans in the immediate post-therapy period after therapeutic doses of l-131 for well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma showed additional lesions in ten of 24 (42%) patients or on 13 of 42 (31%) occasions, whereas the corresponding pretreatment diagnostic scans done with a small test dose failed to reveal the lesions. In four patients, lesions were only discernible on the regional rectilinear scan views and not on the total-body images. The value of post-therapy scans and the importance of obtaining the regional views are emphasized.

Tc-99m MDP and indium-111 chloride scintigraphy in skeletal tuberculosis.

Roger M. Nocera; Bettye A. Sayle; Charles A. Rogers; Donna J. Wilkey

A case of diffuse osseous tuberculosis with changes on skeletal Tc–99m methylene diphosphonate (MDP) and indium–111 chloride scintigraphy is presented. Only two other cases of bone scan findings in osseous tuberculosis (TB) were reported in the literature and both show patterns similar to diffuse metastatic disease. In addition, the demonstration of corresponding areas of decreased tracer activity on indium–111 bone marrow scintigraphy is a finding that has not been previously reported for skeletal tuberculosis.

111In Chloride Bone Marrow Scintigraphy and Ferrokinetic Studies in a Case of Sickle Cell Anemia with Transient Erythroid Aplasia

Richard E. Helmer; Bettye A. Sayle; Jack B. Alperin; Frank H. Gardner

A patient with sickle cell anemia was hospitalized because of an acute erythropoietic aplastic crisis. 111In chloride bone marrow scintigraphy performed during the aplastic crisis showed markedly impaired uptake of the radionuclide and simultaneous 59Fe clearance T 1/2 studies were prolonged (420.9 min). Following recovery from the aplastic crisis 111In scintigraphy revealed an expanded marrow and the radioiron clearance T 1/2 was accelerated (20.9 min). The clinical course, hemograms and bone marrow aspirations correlated with marrow scintigraphy. 111In appears to be a valuable marrow scanning agent for assessing the presence of intramedullary erythropoietic activity.
