The radiation although has hazardous effects for human health, developing technologies bring lots of usage fields to radiation like in medicine and nuclear power station buildings. In this case protecting from undesirable radiation is a necessity for human health. Heavyweight concrete is one of the most important materials used in where radiation should be shielded, like those areas. In this study, used heavyweight aggregates of different mineral origin (Limonite, Siderite), in order to prepare different series in concrete mixtures and investigated radiation shielding properties. The experimental results on measuring the radiation shielding, the heavyweight concrete prepared with heavyweight aggregates of different mineral origin show that, are useful radiation absorbents when they used in concrete mixtures.

The Effect of Boronizing on the Radiation Shielding Properties of Steel

Adnan Calik; H. Akyıldırım; Betül Mavi

The radiation shielding properties of steel and its variation with the boronizing process have been investigated. For this purposes the linear attenuation coefficients of steel have been measured before and after boronizing the steel at the photon energy of 662 and 1250 keV. The measured results before boronizing were compared with the theoretical calculation. It was clearly seen that boronizing improved the radiation shielding properties of steel.

Betül Mavi; Đskender Akkurt; F. Öner; Kadir Günoğlu

The soil on the earth’s crust is a source of continuously exposure to human beings. The amount of radioactivity in soil depends upon the type of soil and its uses. Amasya is located on the inside of the Department of the Central Black Sea. Amasya is situated between 34° 57′ 06″ - 36° 31′ 53″ east longitudes and 41° 04′ 54″ - 40° 16′ 16″ north latitudes. In this study, the concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, 232Th) was measured in some soil samples collected in Amasya region using gamma spectrometer system which contains NaI(Tl) and 16k Multichannel analyser at the Suleyman Demirel University-Gamma Spectroscopy Lab in Isparta (Turkey).

Natural radioactivity concentration of peanuts in Osmaniye-Turkey

Kadir Günoğlu; Betül Mavi; Ayhan Kara

The peanut is grown in Osmaniye where located in southern Turkey. Due to it is grown underground, the measurements of natural radioactivity of peanuts become important. For this reason some peanut samples have been collected from different places of Osmaniye and the measurements of natural activity concentrations for 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in some peanuts samples have been carried out using a NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer. Activity of 40K was measured from its intensive line at 1460 keV, for 226Ra activity peak from 214Bi at 1760 keV and 232Th activity, peak from 208Tl at energy of 2610 keV was used.

ESTIMATION OF GLOBAL RADIATION WITH ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS (ANN) METHOD

Kadir Günoğlu; Betül Mavi

Solar radiation is the cosmic radiation and it can be varied within the season. The atmosphere can absorb some of those radiation and thus earth can be protected. On the other hand solar radiation reach to earth should be known. For this purposes the global solar radiation has been estimated in Isparta for the period of 2008-2009 using Artificial Neural Network where monthly average temperature, humidity solar time monthly average pressure were input.

NATURAL RADIOACTIVITY IN SOME MARBLE SAMPLES

Kadir Günoğlu; Betül Mavi

Marbles is an important materials and can be used widely in building construction. When it is considered that human being can spent their most of time in a building, the measurements of 226Ra activity in marble becomes important. Thus some marbles samples have been collected from Mu?la and their natural radioactivity have been measured using a NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer. Gamma spectrometer was used to determine the activities of uranium (238U), thorium (232Th), potassium (40K). The activity concentrations of 232Th and 238U were obtained by measuring their decay gamma rays. The gamma ray transitions of energies 1760 keV (214Bi), 2610 keV (208Tl) ve 1460 keV (214Bi), were used to determine the concentration of the 238U, 232Th and 40K respectively.

A TEST OF RADIATION ABSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF BLAST-FURNACE SLAG CONCRETE

C. Basyigit; Kadir Günoğlu; Betül Mavi; Ayşe Akkaş

As the radiation has started to be used in a variety of different fields its protection becomes important and different materials have been developed to be used in this purposes. In the development of concrete several different materials can be used. Blast furnace slag, iron and steel mills are some of them. The 2% of the world production in iron-steel is made in Turkey. In this study, as a binding material, Isparta Golta? Cement Inc. s produced, type of cement CEM I 42.5 R and Iskenderun Iron-Steel Factory has been supplying the blast furnace slag was used. The gamma rays absorption properties of blast furnace slag concrete NaI (Tl) detector measured with gamma spectroscopy system, the results will be discussed.
