Supramolecular Engineering with Macromolecules: An Alternative Concept for Block Copolymers

Bgg Bas Lohmeijer; Ulrich S. Schubert

Metallo-supramolecular AB block copolymers are the first examples of macromolecular engineeering. A new concept for the formation of block copolymers by a supramolecular approach is presented. For this purpose the authors utilized an asymmetrical bis(terpyridine)–ruthenium complex as the supramolecular linkage between the two blocks (see figure).

Reversible metallo-supramolecular block copolymer micelles containing a soft core

Jmw Jean-Francois Gohy; Bgg Bas Lohmeijer; Ulrich S. Schubert

An amphiphilic metallo-supramolecular poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer containing a bis(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine)ruthenium(II) complex as a supramolecular connection between the two constituting blocks was used to prepare stable aqueous micelles. The micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy. Individual micelles were observed together with aggregates of micelles. Only the addition of a large excess of competitive ligand caused the cleavage of the very stable ruthenium complex. Schematic illustration of PEB70-[Ru]-PEO70 aqueous micelles in water and after the addition of a large excess of competitive ligand.

Capillary zone electrophoresis of iridium(III) and ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes in non-aqueous solvents

Br Brian Pauw; Elisabeth Holder; Vn Veronica Marin; Bgg Bas Lohmeijer; Ulrich S. Schubert

Abstract A method of non‐aqueous capillary zone electrophoresis has been optimised for the characterisation of five functionalised mixed‐ligand iridium(III) polypyridyl complexes and four functionalised ruthenium(II) bis‐terpyridine complexes. Their mobilities, the relation to their molar mass and the capillary lifetime (measured in number of injections) have been determined.
