This paper presents a comparison between a tubular fluorescent lamp connected to an electronic ballast and subsequently to an electromagnetic and a tubular lamp LED, through the prism of power quality. It is intended to show that the replacement of tubular fluorescent lamps of the LED may have large difference with respect to energy consumption, since the luminous efficiency of the LED tubular evaluated is about 23% higher compared to luminous efficiency of the fluorescent tubular lamp. However, there are some disadvantages associated with the use of these types of lamps for lighting of buildings, such as the generation of harmonic current that can compromise the proper operation of electrical equipment.

The analysis of the power factor and the level of harmonic distortion in an electric system in the presence of non-linear loads are of importance in terms of the legislation enforced by the National Agency of Electric Energy (ANEEL). In this context, this paper uses computer simulation to analyze the influence of the Total and Individual Harmonic Distortions of the Current and of the Voltage on power factor correction on a busbar that feeds linear and non-linear loads.

In the context of power quality the harmonics problems are regulated by normative recommendation based on levels of individual and total distortions by ANEEL - Brazil (National Electric Energy Agency). This paper outlines and implements methodology for mathematical and statistical analysis of the behavior of the total harmonic distortion of voltage and current at the input of a frequency converter feeding an induction motor common, coupled to a mechanical centrifugal fan. The results show a trend of decreasing harmonic distortion with increasing frequency drive the load in question.

Water tree is the major problem that causes unscheduled interruptions, due to degradation of power cable insulation. Therefore, many techniques have been developed to detect water tree at their early stages and to increase the cable efficiency by reducing the timeframe of the cable failure. The loss current technique is a suitable method for investigating this degradation, for the cable degradation by water tree inserts harmonics components in the leakage current. This technique aims to estimate the performance parameters of insulation deterioration from the supply voltage and leakage current measured that flows through the insulation carried out in hot-line cables without interrupting the service. This paper presents the influence of different geometric shapes of the water tree submitted to different voltage stress and different frequency in the values of various parameters that have been used to predict and indicate the operational status of power cables. The results confirm that the geometric shape of water tree has influence in the level of degradation and that the stress increased has been used to identify water trees in their initial stages.

This paper describes some strategies for power factor correction, which consist in the use of capacitor banks and/or tuned passive filters. The methodology is based on the power factor concept in the presence of harmonics, which takes into account the displacement factor and pollution factor. Curves can then be plotted in order to distinguish three regions, which are associated to power factor correction. Three hypothetical cases are properly evaluated in ATPDraw (Alternative Transients Program) environment, where power factor correction is performed at the low voltage side. The strategy has proven to be effective for all proposed cases, being a useful tool in an effective, safe, and economically viable approach.

Technological progress such as the digital electronics, the computer science and the development of propulsion have made air transportation the safest, most efficient and most economic modality. This provided an increase of non-linear load use in all the sectors but mainly in air navigation systems. This paper presents measurements of non-linear loads in the installations of the Detachment of Control of the Airspace of Cuiabá - DTCEACY and analyzes if the individual and total distortions of voltage are in accordance with Brazils Resolution 345/2008 of ANEEL.
