IEEE Announces 2006 Fellows

BENG CHIN OOI Beng Chin Ooi, winner of the 2012 Tsutomu K a na i Award, is a professor of computer science, dean of the School of Computing, and director of the Interactive Digital Media Institute at the National University of Singapore. He obtained a BS and PhD from Monash University, Australia, in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Ooi’s Kanai Award citation reads, “For pioneering research in distributed database management and peer-to-peer based enterprise quality management.” Ooi’s research interests include database system architectures, performance issues, indexing techniques, and query processing in the context of mult imedia, spatiotemporal, distributed, parallel, P2P, and cloud-based database systems and applications. Ooi is currently editor in chief of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, editor of Distributed and Parallel Databases Journal, advisory board member of ACM Sigmod, co-chair of Sigmod’s Jim Gray Best Thesis Award committee, and a trustee board member and executive of the VLDB Endowment. He has served as a planning commit tee member a nd cha ir of numerous international conferences, including the IEEE 2012 International Conference on Data Engineering. Ooi is a recipient of the ACM Sigmod 2009 Contributions Award and a co-winner of the 2011 Singapore President’s Science Award. He is an ACM and IEEE Fellow.
