A student team from North Carolina State University won the first-place prize in the 2006 IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition. The CSIDCs goal is to advance excellence in education by having student teams design and implement computer-based solutions to real-world problems.

The IEEE Computer Society, in conjunction with the IEEE-USA, recently announced its partnership with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying in support of establishing a Principles and Practice of Engineering examination for the software engineering discipline. Other topics include the election of editors in chief for 2011-2013 terms and the appointment of four EICs for CS transactions

Society Supports Software Engineering PE Examination

The IEEE Computer Society recently elected James D. Isaak to serve as president-elect for 2009. In addition, new Board of Governors members and vice presidents also have been selected.

The IEEE Board of Directors conferred the title of Fellow upon 271 Senior members of the IEEE, including 63 Computer Society members.

IEEE Announces 2006 Fellows

BENG CHIN OOI Beng Chin Ooi, winner of the 2012 Tsutomu K a na i Award, is a professor of computer science, dean of the School of Computing, and director of the Interactive Digital Media Institute at the National University of Singapore. He obtained a BS and PhD from Monash University, Australia, in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Ooi’s Kanai Award citation reads, “For pioneering research in distributed database management and peer-to-peer based enterprise quality management.” Ooi’s research interests include database system architectures, performance issues, indexing techniques, and query processing in the context of mult imedia, spatiotemporal, distributed, parallel, P2P, and cloud-based database systems and applications. Ooi is currently editor in chief of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, editor of Distributed and Parallel Databases Journal, advisory board member of ACM Sigmod, co-chair of Sigmod’s Jim Gray Best Thesis Award committee, and a trustee board member and executive of the VLDB Endowment. He has served as a planning commit tee member a nd cha ir of numerous international conferences, including the IEEE 2012 International Conference on Data Engineering. Ooi is a recipient of the ACM Sigmod 2009 Contributions Award and a co-winner of the 2011 Singapore President’s Science Award. He is an ACM and IEEE Fellow.

Computer Society Names Winners of Three Key Awards

Wen-Tsuen Chen, the 2011 IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Award recipient, is a Distinguished Chair Professor in the Department of Computer Science at National Tsing Hua University, where he has served as department chair, dean, and university president.

The University of Chicago’s Ian T. Foster has been named winner of the 2011 IEEE Computer Society Tsutomu Kanai Award for his accomplishments in grid computing.

Parallel computing researcher David Kuck has been named winner of the 2011 IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award “for pioneering parallel architectures including the Illiac IV, the Burroughs BSP, and Cedar; and for revolutionary parallel compiler technology including Parafrase and KAP Tools.”
